Hi there
I am new, I lost my hearing this year in june. I dont wear hearing aids as i cant hear at all even with them. it is a big change anyway I was browsing thro this site and found that everyone here is so encouraging understanding and kind.
What gets me is my friends and family do not understand, so they keep asking if my hearing is back yet? and when is it going to come back, even tho i have repeatedly advised them that doctors state i will never regain my hearing. I have 2 children 13 and 6 girl and boy,I feel terrible for them, as sometimes they want to explaing something and i am unable to hear or understand. apart from sign language is there a way i can teach them to spell words, or communicate with me, any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

hi, welcome to all deaf forums. you come from UK so am I :P
I have lost my hearing aids before in fairground. but now I have 2 new one It take me 11 years to get new one :(, you have to keep going to your GP ask for make appointment in hospital for your hearing test to prove it you are deaf then they will give you new hearing aids as soon as possible :)

Welcome Nell - it must have been a big shock to you to lose your hearing. I assume you had normal hearing before that? Although I was born deaf I lost the rest of my hearing last year and remember how devastating it was. Anyway I recently got a cochlear implant, which has made a big difference especially to my energy levels! Like you I have a small child who is hearing and I really wanted to be a part of her life too.

You should be able to find signing classes locally as lessons are so widespread now. It's good that you are looking at ways of adapting to your situation. I hope that your family become more understanding and accepting that things are different now and that they need to make changes themselves in order to meet your needs.
