Hi, my name is Rick. I recently saw a show on PBS about deafness and some of the challenges deaf people have faced through the years. I am not deaf and haven't really had a lot of interaction with deaf people in my own life.
I am not completely sure what I'm trying to accomplish by posting here, other than to say that an average person's understanding of, and respect for, another group of people was expanded tonight and I just wanted to express that. This seemed like the best place to do it and possibly make new friends in the process.

Hi Rick and welcome. I am a hearing father of a profoundly deaf child. I was like you never realizing about deafness as I was not exposed to it on any level until my child was deafened by menengitis when he was only 18 months old. You can learn alot here as I have. You will also encounter some ugliness as we do in all walks of life. Please read through the threads on deaf culture and also search the internet on the topic. If you are like me, you will be surpised at what you will learn. All the best and Welcome.

Hello and welcome to Alldeaf! Hope you'll enjoy your time interacting with the Deaf, meet and make new acquaintances through here as well as enjoying your stay here also. ;)

Have a great day!

Hello Rick, meeting deaf is your most challenge. Wish you a luck.

Are you crazy over cars of of GTP?

:welcome: to AD Rick!

As a hearing person with little knowledge of deafness and deaf culture..what did u think of the show? Just curious. Dont have to answer if u prefer not. :)

I thought it was a good and informative show, and I didn't realize how deaf people have been treated in the past and present in our society. I thought all the people it talked about were strong and intelligent and just as capable as any hearing person. If a deaf person or people wanted to be my friend I would be glad to have them. For me it's more important what kind of person you are and how you treat other people. Just because you can't hear is not an issue to me. We all have things we can't do. It's just life.

I'm also new here and hearing. I am an ASL Student. I am in the interpreter's program at Union County College in New Jersey. I know I'm going to enjoy this site.
