Does anyone know if TX has some kind of program that covers the cost of hearing aids? I am really asking for my father in law. I have a Deaf daughter who wears one aid and so this info may help us get help paying for her to get a new hearing aid sometime in the future. However, right now I am really needing to find out if there is a program that will help my father in-law get hearing aids. He is in his 50's and has hearing loss in both of his ears. This has happened over the last few years. He can't hear any speech without aids and can only hear a little speech with his in the ear aid. He lost one so he only has one now. He can't afford new aids and would really like to get BTE aids (there is a Miracle Ear hearing aid his father has that he wants as well) so he can hear better. He is really depressed because he can't join in on conversations. Can anyone help me find out if there is a program here in TX that can help him? Thanks so much for any help at all!

I wouldn't go to Miracle Ear. Have him tested by an independent audiologist--not a person in a box store who may have questionable training. There have been *many* complaints about these kind of stores.

An independent audi will consider several different brands, one of which may be better for his particular hearing loss. If you decide that you don't want to get the hearing aids from that audi, get a copy of your test results and you can purchase the HAs where ever you want.

I got my HAs from an independent audiologist. I have BTE Octicon Deltas. They digital and have a directional microphone. They are light and comfortable. An audiologist can suggest which HA is best.

If you do go to Miracle Ear or Beltone, please report on your experience. You may be the exception to the rule. If not, report problems to the attorney general, BBB and any other applicable agency.

Good luck!

A good idea is to look into schools for the deaf for audi services. They can REALLY help you! Miricle Ear and Beltone suck.

Thanks! I will look into DARS and thanks for the advice on the Miracle Ear and Beltone. I thought the same thing about Miracle Ear and will tell my father in law about it. I didn't before b/c he was so set on those Miracle Ear aids great-grandpa has now. I had never heard on Beltone so thanks for the heads up. I didn't realize Miracle Ear stores actually replaced an audi. I would never recommend him do that.

You're welcome If you're in Houston I can recommend a couple of good audis.

Yes we are in the NW Houston area. That would be terrific. We have a good pediatric audi for our daughter but don't know any audis for adults and my father in law just moved here from Cali so he doesn't have one yet.

"Miracle-Ear Maker Sued Over Ads; `Clarifier' Can't Filter Noise, FTC Contends " This was a headline in The Washington Post . I believe Beltone also was sues for saying the same thing about their HA being able to Filter Noise out!

smileysk8, I can't send you a PM with recommendations. Please change your profile to accept PMs or send me an email address via PM.

I had my husband try to figure out how to accept PM's and he said he may have done it but is not sure. I have no idea how to send a PM or set anything up. Please let me know how and I will be sure to do it. Thanks!

I believe you need at least 50 postings on AllDeaf before you are able to send or receive PM's. It is part of an anti-spam measure. At this time, it appears you only have 19 postings.
