it was so sweet when they turned them on...he heard his father, and turned to him and just laughed! but other than that adorable moment, i am not noticing a huge difference. the really good thing is that he is tolerating them very well..hes not tried to rip them out yet, although i completely forgot the whole talk the audiologist just had with me about not pulling on the tubes, and well, almost yanked it apart!

i truly hope that they help my little one! and i am all but convinced that all of these people are getting paid to push the implant because now this lady was saying the same thing, before we even turned the hearing aids on! she was talking about how there were lots of kids who qualify for it, and they were having an "open house" in a few weeks, blah blah blah.
the only thing about them i have noticed is feedback whenever he touches the sides of his head against anyone..he doesnt notice but i wonder if it will give him a headache.

If he doesn't notice, he can't hear it and it won't give him a headache.

It's really important to get new earmolds frequently for a growing child to cut down the feedback.

Congrats on your day! :)

I wouldn't worry about the headache - if he has at least a severe loss, most likely the feedback is not anywhere near loud enough to give him a headache. I know I can barely even hear it myself. (But that could be because my losses are more in the higher range, where the feedback falls into.)

that is what the dr said..he doesnt seem to notice it, and its only when stuff is by his head. the earmolds to me seem kind of small..the part that goes in the ear canal is very short..but he IS a baby though. i guess i can try superglue, if all else fails.

 The short ear canal part will make more feedback, but he will wear them and be happier, as that really can hurt a lot.

I have ear canal stenosis and I can testify to the pain.

i had a horrible time getting them on..i thought that i would just kind of pop them on and thats it..it took me forever, and before i realized what was causing the feedback, i was sort of jamming them in deeper because i thought they were coming out.
needless to say, francis was hating my guts by that point. i also managed to lose a battery in the process but i am learning!

Be careful about the jamming! it's painful when it's shoved in really deep in the canal. But as you say, you're learning :) soon, you'll be a pro.

don't worry about the feedback. My analog hearing aids always whistled like crazy and I was the only person who didn't notice. Did switch one of them for a digital because of Argentine tango - my analog whistled whenever I was in close embrace which wasn't fun for my dance partners.

im not sure what these are..they say "phonak naida 3" on the sides.
i am sooo clueless to all of this.

When I was active in AA, we had a ritual of hugging after meetings. I would just giggle at the squeal. It is a "so what" for me. :grouphug:

Congratulations, frankiesmom. Now we know that he is benefitting from HA's. Now for pulling him out of the developmental delay. Do you have physical therapy services on the plan?

he does, along with occupational, speech, and god knows what other kinds of therapy.

Congrats!!! I am so happy for you! They may be pushed to get CI's in kids, but you know he is at least getting some benefit from the HA's! It will take time for him to learn what the sounds he is hearing means, I'm still learning, but he is so much younger so it will prob be easier for him. Just keep talking and signing to him! I am so happy for you! Its great to find parents who are wonderful with their kids like this!!

With new (or newer) earmolds, it can sometimes be a challenge to get them on. You can get something called, "oto-ease" (I think) and it's similiar to a lubricant but appropriate for the ears.

Since you're still getting used to putting them on him, I would recommend doing it when he's sitting in a high chair so that he won't squiggly around as much.

One trick that helped me get the earmolds in properly was putting the ear canal portion in first, then sort of twisting it up into the upper portion in the ear. You'll figure out what works best for you guys though.

Also, if the ear canal portion isn't in properly, it will cause feedback. The feedback you hear when his head rests against something (your chest, for example) is completely normal. You can just try to reposition him, or yourself accordingly. It seems to become less of an issue as they get older.

oh ok then! and thanks everyone, for the advice too, it has helped our family a lot.
and yes, they recommended the lubricant stuff too. she made it look so easy!
