HARMLESS PHASE OR SERIOUS PROBLEM?
Deciding what is "normal" for our kids is not as easy as it sounds.
I have found that in general, the shift from normal child behavior
to a serious problem begins when the behavior starts interfering with
the child’s everyday routines and relationships around him.
Here are just a few questions that may help you decide if your child has
a serious problem or not. If you answer one or more of these questions
as "yes", then it is time to talk to a teacher, guidance counselor,
minister, doctor, or other professional for some help and support.
1. Is your child silent for long periods of time,
withdrawn socially, with few friends?
2. Is your child constantly failing in their
school work or seem to have a significant
reading problem?
3. Does your child have any kind of eating
disorder you detect?
4. Does your child scratch, cut, bruise, or
burn themselves?
5. Does your child show an excessive and
noticeable fear of a particular family member,
while treating all other family members normally?
6. Is your home in chaos or conflict because of your
child’s behavior?
7. Does your child have anger outbursts, blowups,
or consistently get into fights?
8. Does your child report hearing voices?
9. Does your child have serious sleep problems
or constant nightmares?
10. Does your child use alcohol or experiment
with drugs?
11. Does your child have panic attacks or periods
of intense anxiety?
12. Does your child show a strong interest in the
occult, black magic, or anti-religious activity?
13. Is your child involved in illegal activities?
14. Does your child show consistent noncompliant,
disrespectful, or aggressive behavior in the
home or at school?
Remember, getting professional help may be the most courageous and
loving act you ever do as a parent.
