Hair cells?

All I can say is that we prolly will never see hair cell regeneration. Yes, stem cells could cure hearing loss..........but it's still very much in the rhetorical stages right now. Frankley I think that the CI,hearing aid and other hearing related industries have too much profit at stake, to even ALLOW hair cell regeneration. Besides, I know people with spinal cord injuiries who got injuired back 30-15 years ago and they were told that spinal cord regeneration was just around the corner...............*looks around* Gee, nothing's changed!

I believe you are in error and kimchi has caused the mass exodus of the Korean people to the US and home of the good hamburgers and french fries.

You are forgetting the hair cell industry stands to make huge profits, way more than the CI industry. In fact, the CI industry very well may offer hair cell regeneration themselves. They know they could make billions, way more profitable than CI. Why fight hair cells when they can join in and reap the spoils?

Worst case scinerio they don't allow hair cell regen. in America, we will simply travel to other countries to get hair cells. I bet it's already being done experimentally today(see post in my blog, link in sig and above) and several years from now, there will be thousands getting hair cells.

Remember laser eye surgery? There once was a fear it would put glasses companies out of business. Wrong! In fact many optometry chains get commission/kickbacks for referring you to laser eye surgery! Most people still stick with glasses as laser isn't covered by insurance and is considered elective, not to mention risky and it doesn't give better vision than glasses.

I wouldn't be surprised if insurance finds a way not to pay for stem cells just as they don't pay for HAs. Maybe they will pay for deaf babies and young children to get stem cells but probably not for adults. It might even be considered elective with the argument that HAs can do the job. I don't care, im still getting stem cells and ill pay for it myself if I have to.

I want those billions of dollars!!!

Lol @ Souggy, Botts and Jiro. U guys crack me up!

If it happens, then I will have to force myself to be a part of Darwin's theory of evolution and evolve myself.

I have to say that I favour gene therapy and stem cell over bionic means though. The word itself, bionic, is contradictory and ironic even if you think about the cultural definition. :P But yes, if the day of reckoning come, I bet a lot of people will be defecting to Korea to bypass the FDA.

Deafdude, you are missing the part in the article that says that it is easily 20 years away.

Deafdude...........it's still quite rhetorical. It might work, but then again it might not....They still don't know. ....and it will be years and years before it's even possible. Matter of fact, it may nt ever happen.
