Gun Child Playing With Discharges, Striking Mother

(WCCO) St. Paul A St. Paul woman was shot by her 3-year-old son Sunday afternoon, police said.

Police were called to a house in the 1500 block of McLean Avenue around 12:30 p.m. on a report of a woman hit by gunfire.

When police arrived, they found a 43-year-old woman who had been shot in the knee. Police learned that the woman's 3-year-old son was handling a gun he found under a sofa cushion.

Police said the woman took the gun from the child, removed the clip and allowed the child to continue to play with the gun. The gun had a round in the chamber and it discharged, striking the woman.

The woman was taken to Regions Hospital, where she is in fair condition.

The St. Paul Police Department is forwarding information to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office for possible charges.

what the world .. mother is thinking.. give back to the child and let it play after she removed chamber.. (rme) I would NOT let child play with REAL gun.. sheesh!

Indeed crazy and really ridiculous!! Not only was it bad enough that the mother handed back the gun, but setting it off from his tiny hands surely has to be an excruciating and frightening experience. Perhaps this mother will be 'hit' with negligence...and endangering the life of this youngster with handling a firearm. Although, nothing was said of the 'state of condition' the mother may have been in when handing back that gun--that remains to be seen.

That is freakin crazy and really ticks me off. These are the people that give gun ownership a bad name. First, why was the child even allowed access to it? I don't mean playing with it, but how did the kid get it to begin with. Then, the stupid mother removes the magazine and gives the thing back to the kid.....UUUGGGHHHHH

I don't have any kids still keep my guns secured the same as if there were a child in the house. I have nieces that visit so I make sure that everything is kid proof in regards to my guns...even when they aren't there.

At least this one ended happily (in my opinion) and she was the one that was shot and not the kid. Guns are designed for adult hands and its difficult for a child to hold a gun the way an adult does (straight out...finger on trigger). In most cases when you hear of a kid that shoots himself, its because of how children hold guns. Their little fingers are strong enough to pull the trigger so what they do is point the gun facing themselves and push on the trigger using both of their thumbs. I'm glad it was the mother who got her kneecap blown off and the kid lived to talk about it.

It's very scary to have guns in the household... :Ohno:

Gun control to be restriction for civil duties only...

I am so sorry, I do not get this because the gun was under the sofa cushion? You could practically sit down and have your ass shot off? I believe the mother is very irresponsible to have the gun laying around when there is a very young child in the house. Mother deserved to be shot in her knee...not the child. Sheesh. :nono:

Gosh this is crazy and gotten me mad now. I hope that the mother get trouble for this. I wouldnt allow any kind of weapons in my house even if it a toys weapons.

I disagree... People should be able to own guns, including assault rifles and all of those other nice things. Using them, however, is another story, and they should be kept in a safe place, where little hands will not be able to get at them.

I think the NRA is a disgusting group of people, but I can't deny that I agree with them. Take away weapons and we become a police state. Even if it never actually happens, the very possibility of the government using the military and its resources to oppress the people is reason enough for the public to be armed. When the Nazis took over Weimar Germany, when the fascists took over Italy and Japan, whent he Baathists took over Iraq... The first thing they all did was use gun registries to seize all of the public's weapons.

There are two ways to dispose of a regime, the first is through elections, the second is through revolution. The first typically becomes impossible because voting for anyone other than the current regime becomes illegal. The second is impossible because the government seized all of the weapons and made selling new ones illegal. So you are stuck with a terrible government and no way to get out.

In order to prevent that from happening... we need the public to be sufficiently armed.

pathetic that the gun was hidden under a sofa cushion where even an infant could find it cause it's not THAT hard to find a dangerous weapon like under the sofa cushion...that was way too stupid to do that. *shooks head*

The gun MUST always be in a box made of steel and have a very strong lock with it also. with a code only the owner of the gun would know.

good thing the woman survived but let's hope she learned the lesson about the gun.

oh man.. mother's fault let 3 yrs old play with gun but this is STUPID! i wont let them play with gun!

That mother was stupid to leave the gun in an unsafe place to begin with. To hand the gun back to the child is the ultimate stupidity.

I'm less worried (but it could happen) about the government taking over than I am about the thug down the street looking for a target....he could pick any house on my street, but tonight it might be my house...and ultimately it is my responsibility what happens to me in the middle of the night.
