IN celebration of the International Deaf Day, children with hearing disabilities will be treated to a football clinic at the Cebu Technological University today.
In partnership with the Cebu City Government and the Department of Social Welfare and Services, organizations like the Gualandi Volunteer Service Program Inc., Cebu Association of the Deaf, Apostolic Mission of the Deaf, Gualandi Mission for the Deaf, Philippine and Federation of the Deaf Youth Sector have joined efforts to share the issues and needs of deaf individuals.
“We want to create awareness in the population regarding different issues that concern the deaf,” said Marlou Agbay of PFDYS.
The event, which used to be held only within the deaf community, has expanded by exposing participants this time to the hearing community.
“We want the deaf children to learn and experience the game of football,” said John Paul Maunes, GVSP Program Manager.
The clinic, which will be held in the afternoon after the opening program in the morning, will be facilitated by members of the Kaholeros Cebu, which Maunes heads, along with 20 volunteer members.
This will be the second time that the group will teach elementary and high school students the basics of football. The first one was held last Sept. 9 in an activity organized by the Philippine Air Force.
“We’ll demonstrate to the kids how to play the game and eventually the kids will follow because they already know the sport of football,” said Sherlock Sison, vice-president of Kaholeros Cebu.
A friendly match between the volunteers and the deaf team selection will cap the activity.
A total of 250 deaf children from various centers are expected to join the activity, which aims for the inclusion of the children with disability in different sports such as football.
“We want to let them know that even if they are deaf, it should not hinder them from playing football,” said Maunes.
The event will be launched by a mass, which will be followed by the parade from Sto. Niño Basilica to CTU and then the opening program to be attended by Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.
