I was working, ( i work at the bank as a teller) and a deaf man came in with some stuff to do with his acct, pay bills, get some money etc. Anyways, he recently recieved a visa and he needed to activate it, well he wrote to me (he is severely deaf and cant talk) that he wanted it activated...well usually we can't for security reasons, and the customer has to do it themselves, but i've never come across this situation before so I asked my supervisor if i could considering the circumstances, and unfortunately i couldnt. My supervisor said they'd have to use "the hearing impaired telephone thing" ...hearies..lol...Anyways so i went back and wrote back to him that sorry i couldnt do it and he would have to use TTY and get it activated. I guess he was really surprised that i knew what a TTY was and he wrote how did i know... so instead of writing i pointed to my ears and i mouthed hoh ..he gave me a Huge smile and i think was really happy and relieved he got someone who knew what it felt like to get someone who knew to be patient and such..So he left very happy and it made me feel really good that I could help someone out and made their day a little better..
Plus my supervisor was pleased to see that we could properly make him happy since at the bank its all about customer comes 1st and customer service and satisfaction is very important!

Now i also have a q ..i mite be getting an ha soon and i usually wear my hair down so u wouldnt even see it..but if i wear it up somedays and u cud see it do u think customers mite be rude about it or not willing to let me serve them??

I have worn hearing aids since I was three, so they are a part of me, but most people don't even notice, especially if you get the ones that go in the ear and not behind the ear. If you speak well, they will never notice, and if they do, so what? Ignorance is everywhere. I know I shock people on occasion when I make jokes about my hearing, but at 30, I better have come to terms with it by now. I wouldn't worry about it. Most people don't say anything about that. If you need it, then use it.

Isn't that cultural connection a wonderful thing? It fulfills a basic need that all humans have, and too often, its importance is devalued.

especially if you get the ones that go in the ear and not behind the ear.
I dunno...........I think the ITE ones are noticable.
A lot of people don't even notice them. I've worn aids since I was three, and basicly hardly anyone notices them.

i notice ppl with ITE's b4 bte's since its like a hard plastic shell and not a clear mold..and i dunno bout anywhere else but its usually older men and women that have ITE's..

So are you gonna get BTEs? BTEs rock! You can get them in all different colors!

hopefully!

I havent 100% surely found out if im getting ha's but i think i def need them now..im going into university next year and i cant get by on trying my hardest at hearing things in school nemore..plus i have a lot of trouble watching tv, having phone convos, and i cant hear whispering so it kinda stinks...so ya if i do get them :fingersx: i will get bte cuz there are more styles available and i need to be able to have an fm hook up if i have big auditorium classes=)..Any advice on for first time ha'ers? lol

I have a BTE in my right ear... if I ever do go back and get a new mold (when I get insurance) I'm going to get blue and white for my state colors. :)

Also, I just started working and have had a few encounters with deaf people... one in particular was shocked that I knew how to sign and so he asked me and I signed "h-h" for hard-of-hearing and he started chatting with me.

My boss almost complained because I was signing too much and not doing my work. OOPSIE!
