Ever since my one hearing aid has been fluctuating (it went to a permanent low volume for about a week or two), my parents have been wanting to get me into the hearing center in town to look at new hearing aids. First I had to get one of the audiology exams to see where my hearing was at, but the audiologist told me that I would have to get my wax removed and then come back for another appointment. The problem with my ears are that the ear wax dries up and crusts really quickly (this is what the audiologist told me) and gets pushed to the back, hence the reason why I have to go to the doctor's to actually get my wax removed from the back of my ear canal instead of using Q-tips like normal people.

Anyway, I'm rambling on too much. So after that we went to look at hearing aids, and the woman who I've been using for hearing needs since I first started using hearing aids (over 13 years ago) said that the best hearing aids we would get for a really good price are Phonak Certenas. :) So, long story short, in the next couple weeks I am going down to order new hearing aids! :) I'm quite happy as I've had the same hearing aids for 5 years. They are also a surprisingly good price (with ear molds & a remote control included!) We are also getting the regular $500 government subsidy.

The only thing I'm debating about right now is the colour. The ones I have right now are blue and the colour isn't practical enough. I want my hearing aids to look appropriate in pretty much any situation. So here are the colours I was thinking about getting: black, beige, gray, light gray (white-ish) or see-through. What are your opinions? I think that the first four are the most pracitcal. I'm looking for practicality.

PS: I decided to get the bilateral (ones that go behind the years) instead of the ones that go directly in the ears because she had told me that my hearing loss is too extreme to get the inner ear ones. If I was to get them, she said they would be low quality and really really big and ugly.

My hearing aids are purple and totally practical for any situation! My glasses are purple too and no one says that isn't practical! Have fun with them and make them look good if they are stuck on your ears every day!

Also, you should be getting $500 per ear from the government, so $1000 in total. Make sure that happens!

Yes what jennyb said make sure its 500 per ear not total...i have see thru and they are cool! also the ones that are behind the ear are called BTE's not bilateral..lol bilateral means ur getting hearing aids in both ears.

At the moment I have what I really would refer to as Violet solid color purple Phonaks.

I suppose as a boy I can't convince you that this would be a really good color choice?

So I would have to say go with the Black.

By practical I assume you mean blend in, then go with something that matches your hair color.

Sorry, I have never taken the time to learn technical terms.
I should probably learn!

I think that the hearing center is automatically deducting it from the cost. Is that normal? Or should we have to deal with that seperately? Being a deaf rights activist in Canada, you should know more about that than I do. I am also pretty sure that she deducted $500 from each ear, because I remember the cost per hearing aid before taking the $500 off was $500 more expensive.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. I didn't really notice any colours that went with my hair, though. :(

Don't apologize! Just sayin :p And yes it should be $500 per ear and your audi does it not you. Jenny just is saying to make sure it's 500 per ear and 1000 in total...in your original post it made it sound like they were deducting 500 in total so that's why she asked.

LOL! Yes, I know. I got my first hearing aids when I was three years old, so I was never taught the technical terms. I've also never really been exposed to the deaf world. :(

Black or see through would look sophisticated. Black goes with EVERYTHING.

Yes, they will deal with ADP themselves. They will probably give you a form to fill out but that is it. They just won't charge you that $1000.
