I don't think anybody in here knows German Sign Language. Majority of us know American Sign Language. I think there were two people here who know German Sign Language but they don't come to this forum anymore.

And I also want to learn how to speak in German. :D

Presumably it is a "judgment call" how one allocate "scare funds" to study what is "deemed important".
Is this part of life?

First of all, if your friend lives in Switzerland you will need to find out if he or she uses German Sign Language or Swiss German Sign Language. I believe there are five major dialects of Swiss German Sign Language.

For learning German, you will definitely need to find an instructor to help explain German grammar. If you want to learn German to communicate with your Swiss friend, bear in mind that Swiss German is different than Hochdeutsch (standard High German). Most Swiss understand High German; however, in their daily lives they use their dialect of Swiss German. (BTW, I asked a German who was born and raised on the border with Switzerland if he understood Swiss German and he said he couldn't.) One example of the difference between Swiss German and Hochdeutsch - the Swiss do not use the "Eszett" - ß - which is used in Hochdeutsch. The Swiss will substitute the letter with a double "s"; for example, Hochdeutsch "die Straße" and Swiss German "die Strasse".

Also Standard Swiss German, there are some differences in vocabulary. I can't think of any right now (I don't speak Swiss German), but I do know that in Switzerland some words have different genders than in Hochdeutsch.

Good luck!!

German sign language is different from american sign language. My daughter is hard of hearing and she knows the German language as do I. The books that I found were only in german. Then again i was in Germany when i bought them. Plus the language alone has a different sentence structure, which could also change the way you put signs to a sentence like American sign language. It may be easier to search on the german search engine but it will be in german. Google

This is an old post. From her past posts, I don't think she has a Switzerland boyfriend anymore.
