The Peachtree City, Georgia, police chief who says he accidentally shot his wife in their home early New Year's Day shot her once in their bedroom, Inspector Sherry Lang of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said today.

The incident has left the small-town police department "hurting," Peachtree City police spokesman Lt. Mark Brown said at a news conference this afternoon.

Brown called chief of police William McCollom "well-liked, well-loved."

"We are concerned for his wife and are concerned for the chief," Brown said.

There were no witnesses inside the home and the shooting took place in the couple's bedroom, the GBI's Lang said at the news conference.

McCollom earlier called 911 after 4 a.m. today and said he shot his wife in their home by accident, the GBI told ABC affiliate WSB in Atlanta.

His wife, Margaret McCollom, is in critical condition at Atlanta Medical Center, according to District Attorney Scott Ballard. He said that she is expected to undergo surgery today.

McCollom has been placed on administrative leave and an internal review is underway.

And he didn't get Charged. The Chief doesn't get to see a Judge? Unlike that Montana man went to prison for protecting his family when a burglar intruded his garage

lots of cops make mistakes with guns strange mostly in Hispanic or afro/American areas...not sure about professional

Just feel it's strange...because he shot his wife "twice"?

:dunno:

"Initial reports indicated McCollom told a 911 operator he shot his wife twice, but a preliminary investigation revealed he shot her once with his service weapon in the bedroom of their Peachtree City home, Sherry Lang, spokesperson for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), said."

Even more confusing:

"Chief McCollom is a Wyoming native who spent much of his long law enforcement career in Florida beach communities, serving for more than two decades in the Delray Beach Police Department before becoming chief of the Tequesta Police Department in 2006. At the time, news reports described him as a father of six who was married to Suzanne Carter, a rabbi who served as chief chaplain at the Delray Beach Police Department. They divorced in early 2014. An earlier marriage, to Margaret Alice Morse, ended in divorce in 1999. It is not clear whether she is the woman who was shot."

Yeah is first reported he shot his wife twice but it was only once. How would you accidently shoot your wife 2 times ?
It depends on what he was doing at the time. We don't know yet.

And what did he have his gun out in the bedroom ?
Maybe that's where he keeps it. That's not uncommon, especially as a police officer. He has to keep his gun close at hand or on his person, so the bedroom makes sense. He might have been getting dressed or undressed at the time.

I know people keep their guns in their bedrooms but I wonder why the cop had it out. The other person that know what happen is the wife and if she does not recover I doubt we'll really know the true . I have a neighbor that a cop and I never seen him in his uniform , I had wanted to ask him if he bring his gun home but decided that not a good idea.

He could have been getting ready to go on duty and putting it on, or coming home from duty and taking it off, or cleaning it. There's nothing suspicious in that.

Yet, the husband called for help, so it seems that he wants her to survive even if she tells what happened.

My next door neighbor is a CSI officer but I haven't seen him in uniform.

Police officers are supposed to keep their guns with them all the time, off duty and on duty, so yes, your neighbor would bring it home.

Of course, MDA is full of libtards.

I guess I am so use to watching TV shows and seeing the cops come home wearing their uniforms. If I had a gun it be kept by my bed at night.
Crime is getting bad no matter where you live today.

. . . Crime is getting bad no matter where you live today.
That's a fact. There have been several break-ins and attempted break-ins in my neighborhood lately, during the day time, even with the residents at home.

I keep reading and re-reading his response and sounds odd. Mind you I know it's one thing to read his response and another to hear it but something sounds off about this....hard to understand why he had the gun by the bed, loaded, and why it went off moving it....

When you think of the Mom that put her gun in the purse and was shot by her child, and this cop, who was "experienced in gun handling" - it proves that anyone can have a lapse in judgement. I hope his wife fully recovers. Sounds like her husband needs to retire from his position....
