shaving their heads.. how that tradition begin? anybody who went to gallaudet shaved their head here??

I have few friends who went to Galludent College, they did shave their hair off but they said people would respect if someone don't want to shave the hair off.

my friend who is currently a student at Gallaudet, she used to have longest hair and she shaved her hair last year. I saw her last week and she looks better with short hair.

I am not sure how exactly that tradition began but as far as I can tell you, I used to be a student there and yes, I've shaved my hair off for that event. It's called "Bald Day". Basically it is for the freshmens to compete to try to break the previous classes's record. I can say it was so much fun to do it and daring too! It was worth every moment and the memories too.

i am up for it, but i was just curious how this tradition began.. its interesting to know. lol

Could have arised from any event that is associated to these traditions in other parts of the world;

I don't know how the hell it started and I think it's a umm... dumb tradition. There was something that was tried as a tradition here at NTID, but it never really continued... bleaching hairs. It was done only a couple times and that was 5 and 6 years ago. Heh!

Shaving or bleaching... what's the point? I don't see how it relates to the beliefs of the colleges or their history. :roll:

When I was at Gally during open house in February the guy giving us the tour made it abundantly clear that it was "not a school sponsored event." He must have told the parents 10 times that the school did not support or encourage the event because it's viewed as hazing.

I personally don't plan to shave my head. One of my friends pointed out that I "could be one of, if not the first hearing person to do it," but I really don't care that much. I like my hair. :)

I used to attend Gally, you're right they mentioned that it's not part of the Gally's system but yearly many freshmens do shaves their head and ofc some dont...

I ve had friends who gone to Gally and tell the same story. Dunno how that got started but its been going on for years now. :dunno: Also I heard that there is another tradition at Gally (If Im wrong here, please correct me) that students try to pull fire alarm as many times as possible in a semester/year (?) to beat last year's record. :cheers: Party time at Gally!!

Someone told me that it has something to do with a lice problem they had years ago. Some students found it to be fun and decided to make it tradition.

Perhaps, it's something that became misunderstood and carried on as a tradition for the wrong reasons... like the Olympics volleyball team who shaved their heads to honor a teammate who was bald. Maybe, someone saw that and decided to follow that too. Then, it became a fad... then a tradition.

It could be anything. Personally, I think it's a dumb tradition... until someone tells me something GOOD that makes SENSE of why it's a tradition. :roll:

Doesn't shaving your head have something to do with walking through the coffin door?

No. The legend behind the coffin door was that, years ago, some freshmen walked through it, and not a single one of them graduated. So the story goes that any freshmen who walk through it are doomed to fail.

I did shave my hair when I was freshman year at Gallaudet... Right now, I am SRA (Staff Residential Assistant) for Ballard West, they had few policies for shave hair, if shave hair in residence hall, will get consequence, also if peer pressure (such as someone force u to shave ur hair if u dont wanna) will also get consequence... Impt u will learn more abt Gallaudet and Residence Hall's policies when u come to Gallaudet's NSO...

I knew Residence Hall had little weird policies... Impt u will get handbook and read for like 5 or 10 mins of ur time to learn their policies (not only RH, included Gallaudet's policies) u will find some info abt shave their hair on campus isnt allowed... If wanna shave their hair, have to be off campus and we cant do anything... Thats cool, will see u around at Ballard West :)

It makes perfect sense, actually. "Bald Day" is considered by the university to be "hazing," and they try very hard to make it clear that it is not a school-sanctioned event.
