Does anyone think that in the future someone with a greater loss in one ear instead of both could get a CI for the bad ear. Like someone with SSD? instead of wearing ha or baha. Like if someone had a 50 dB loss in one ear and like a 105 dB loss in the other why couldn't the person get a ci for the bad ear?

Yeah. If anybody interest to try get an implant in future. If they don't want to get it. They may could be change their mind to get an implant. Some people prefer wear hearing aids. I have no idea about BaHa. I never hear of this before. I thought Baha for mild hearing loss not serve like CI. SSD can't pay them an implants. This is limit money. Only medicaid, medicare, voc rehab can pay for it. Also good insurance from work will pay cover for CI and HA. Some deaf people don't want to get a CI or need HA to hear. It's up to them. I has 90% profoundly deaf. I am still wear hearing aids. But I will get an implant in few years later. I don't like to get bulky BTE for implant. I rather wait until decade later. I am looking forward to see in future for implant's tech. I would love to get a mini BTE for implant. I read your post about your hearing aids. You're lucky to be hard of hearing. :)

ssd meaning single sided deafness not the ssd for gov't assistance (i think that's wat ssd is).
And yes i'm hoh but my loss is progressive but so far my left has only changed a smidge and my right has jumped more..so say down the road if i wanted a ci i cannot get one cuz you need to be totally deaf in both ears even if u only want a ci in your bad ear...?

My understanding is that the way you hear with a CI is different than the way you hear with normal hearing, like it sounds different. I am sure over time your brain could adjust but I have a feeling it would be very confusing.

Just out of curiosity do you know the cause of your loss?

my doctors *think* it's because of all the ear infections and burst ear drums i had as a baby/kid i had them constant like 1-3 a month til i was like 6...which is a lot of ear infections! lol and i had more in my right ear and i burst my ear drum 3 or 4 times in my right..which is my bad ear. I still get ear infections not as frequent tho since i got my tonsils and adenoids taken out. And still when i get ear infections they're always worse in my right :(

Exact same thing happened with me! Except I didn't have my tonsils out, the ear infections just stopped when I was about 10. It sucks when everytime you get an ear infection, or a ruptured eardrum you know that you are going to lose a bit more hearing. I totally get your frustration on that one!

I also have DPHL (dominant progressive hearing loss) which has caused my loss to progress further.

Oh I got it! Thank you for telling me about SSD stand for. LoL My audiologist and doctor asked me if I would try to get a CI. I used to against CI when I was teenager. I changed my mind I want to get a CI. I can't hear a word like you do. I am not hard of hearing. I am not speak very well. I am very mute. But I do speak little a bit. It's basic words are easy for me to use voice. I can't hear my voice. I can hear with HA for my dog's bark, knock the door, lock the car, slam the door, windy and noise. My little cousin has 2 implants. He was born with 90% deaf like me. His mom decide to took him a CI when he was 15 months old. He got second CI last Feb. I am not sure if my ears are bad.

I could have sworn that they are already doing this at least at some clinics in the States. However, I doubt that it will be commonly seen, especially in countries that have universal health care. I know that even if you're really qualified, its hard to get CI in UHC countries.

Yes I think it is very much possible that you can get the implants on the bad ear, but it can get very confusing in the head especially since the sounds from CI are very different from those of hearing aids and normal hearing. Do you benefit from HA on the bad ear? How do you manage if HA dont help? I am curious, because maybe you are making the best use of the better ear, like sitting in a position near the better ear.

I have 95Db in both since 5, and I am going to go in for CI this summer hopefully. My left is better so I am going to continue wearing HA on the left and CI on the right.

I still benefit from ha on my bad ear cuz i only have a 50 dB loss right now, but it is progressive, so wat im saying is in the future if it (ever) gets to the point i get no benefit from ha could i get a CI if i still have one "good" ear. I would much rather have two working ears than just one. when my right ear is really bad sometimes and bothering me i don't feel like being that much lopsided one day! lol

I've never heard of it being a problem.

I know some people who have CI for one ear and a BTE hearing aid in the other ear.

If you're talking about one ear being legally deaf and another not being legally deaf, then I don't really know how that works.
