Al Sharpton has taken a lot of heat lately for showing up in Ferguson, Missouri following the shooting death of Michael Brown and the ensuing riots.

The mayor of Ferguson says Sharpton’s timing couldn’t be worse, showing up to “demand justice” just as the violence is calming–never mind the fact that there’s been no “injustice” yet proven. He was also met on the streets of Ferguson not only by supporters, but also by hecklers who asked about his career as a federal informant.

Now former NBA player Gilbert Arenas has weighed in on Sharpton and the riots in Ferguson on Instagram.

According to Breitbart, Arenas says that Al Sharpton is such a polarizing figure that his inserting himself into racially-charged situations actually reduces the chances of justice being done.

He begged victims’ families not to ask Sharpton for help, saying that they would be better served seeking assistance from Caesar, a fictional chimpanzee from the Planet of the Apes films.

Arenas also argued that the black community only hurt itself in riots, because they occur in predominantly black neighborhoods and therefore damage property owned by black families.

“About 10 riots from the black community over the years and the only thing damaged ,was the BLACK COMMUNITY by The BLACK COMMUNITY,” he wrote.

The principle is both clear and conservative–while altruism certainly exists, people generally act in their own self-interest. If someone makes their money by fighting poverty, they’ll never want to win, as it would eliminate their job. In fact, the more poverty they can discover to fight, the better a case they can make for the importance of their position.

Al Sharpton earns his living fighting racial injustice. You do the math.
