For those of you with a CI, do you experience "electrocution"?

When you turn on your CI for the day, do you have a minute of "shock"/"electrocution" that you have to settle in for a minute before it goes away?

I just got activated three weeks ago and it happens to me everytime I turn it on (Nucleus 5), and it's quite annoying!!!

Anyone with experience, please let me know and give me hope that the "shocks" eventually go away foreverrrrrrrrr.

My daughter experienced a very strong sensation when she would be connected for about a week. We would turn down the volume for a minute, and then turn it back up. That seemed to help a lot. After about a week, she didn't need it anymore.

I have not experience shocks when first turn on but there was an increase of loudness and then just settle in for a minute, but if you have having a shock for a minute and does not decrease in time. I would tell my audiologist about it. It may be a map issue.

I did tell my audie about it. I am about to go in for my third mapping and they said it will eventually go away... But I sound crazy when I ask people about it!

i was gonna suggest maybe trying to turn down the volume too b4 putting it on and then turning it back up after too but im not a CI user so I didn't post it lol if that doesn't work maybe try the sensitivity turning it down b4..and if that doesnt work maybe try rubbing ur hands on a bounce sheet to remove any static u have on ur hands before popping your CI into place...lol if none of that works then i dunno what to tell ya haha

are you in physical pain?

You probably just sensitive. give it some time.

actually I had mine since 2003, and I still hate putting on my CI first thing in the morning because of that. Kinda like cold shower feeling. I could turn the volume down, but it doesn't always help.

I had mine for nearly 2 years, I used to get those sensitations once I put my CI on in the mornings, I think it's due to that we were without it for good few hours then to put the CI on it's like a power surge and it does goes away after few seconds. Currently I don't get it as I got used to it also I am due for new map as the sound quaility had gone quieter. I suspect after they had re tuned my CI I will have those "surges" for few weeks then I'll eventually get used to it.

Congrats on your activication and it'll improve over time, just be patience.

My question is, is it like static shocks as if you rub ballon on you and zaps people? if that is the case I would tell Audi.

Or if it's like a "surge" (feels like chill down the spine but in the ear)type thing, it's perfectly normal especially in the early stages and it'll improve over time.

No, I never experienced that.

I do recall that turning it on first thing in the morning could be rough.

It should get better for you as time goes on.

Ah just like this video which was shown in "Through Deaf Eyes"

It's normal but it's not electrocution.

Imagine you being in the dark for a long time and then you go outside in a bright sunny day, your eyes hurt. That's the same effect. It takes a while for the brain to compress the stimuli to a tolerable level.

I've had my ci for 11 years...I do remember when I first got it that it was a lil loud but over time it was no big deal...I would turn it down before putting it on and see if that helps...This shows how people are different and unique I have notice there is some negativity on ci....I absolutely love my ci I can't wait to turn it on in the mornings I love hearing the birds singing, frogs singing I think its absolutely amazing...Im going for my second July 27th wooohoooo

Although my daughter doesn't indicate any discomfort, this has inspired me to get her volume setting toggled on in our next mapping (audis often deactivate it so toddlers can't accidentally mess with it), so we can start off slowly in the morning, just in case.

I love the video Boult posted: I remember how it scared the pants off me when I first saw it :) and I watched Li very carefully for any sign of being startled upon putting on her processor in the morning when she was first implanted.

I do not get electrocution with my implant but in the mornings when I turned it out I do get a burst of loud sound then it goes back to normal

You should go to see your audi

So far haven't "felt electrocution" when inserting Implant in the morning. Yeah the sound is louder as I deaf. Just decrease the volume which I do. Is this a difference between various brands? I don't know. Just had this one-- 3 years-now.

Advanced Bionics- Harmony Atria activated Aug/07

Nope!

I experience no "electrocution" at all. It can be a little loud at first but no pain or discomfort at all. I usually waite about 15-20 mins till im fully awake before I put the processor on tho. I look forward to wearing my " ear" everyday.

Yes, I did have that shock a bit when I first had my CI. But after a while as your body gets more used to the CI, you'll get less and less of it. You may want to also check to see if there's currently no loud noise going on (i.e. air conditioners) as you put it on.

I only get shocked when I am cleaning the battery terminal cables on the big ole red truck ... No biggie...
