(USA TODAY) Flu vaccines were only 19% effective in preventing doctor visits for influenza this season, one of the lowest rates in the past decade, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

Health officials had predicted flu shots would be less protective than usual this year. That's because the viruses used to make the flu shots weren't a good match for the dominant strains of influenza in circulation, said Brendan Flannery, an epidemiologist in the CDC's influenza division.

•Flu vaccine proves far less effective than usual

Scientists face a difficult challenge each year when selecting the virus strains to be included in seasonal flu shots, said Andrew Pekosz, an associate professor at theJohns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore. That's because flu viruses, unlike the measles or polio viruses, undergo significant genetic changes each year. So the vaccine needs to change every year, too.

Scientists from the CDC and Food and Drug Administration survey the dominant flu strains annually and make their selections in February, Flannery said. That gives manufacturers about six months to produce the vaccines, which ship out to clinics the following fall. Last year, however, flu viruses began mutating almost as soon as companies began production.

"This is a perfect example of what happens when the virus and the vaccine don't synchronize," Pekosz said.

In the past decade, effectiveness rates for flu shots have ranged from 10% to 60%, according to the CDC.

A so-called universal flu shot could solve this problem, said influenza expert Arnold Monto, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. These shots would be made with parts of a flu virus that don't change every year. Ideally, one shot would protect people for at least several years.

Given the complexity of developing universal flu vaccines, they're unlikely to be available to the public for another five to 10 years, Monto said.

Flu kills 3,000 to 49,000 Americans each year, according to the CDC. More than 140 children died from the flu this season in 40 states and New York City, according to the new CDC report. Only about half of Americans get a flu shot each year, although the CDC recommends them for everyone over age 6 months.

In spite of the flu shot's limitations, people are still better off being vaccinated, Pekosz said.

"There's nothing harmful about the vaccine," Pekosz said. "There's no disadvantage to getting it."

Alright!...and just as I suspected...just a $$ making scheme. I've never had a Flu Shot, even tho' my doctor tried to convince me of it. I use sanitizer, even at the grocery store, use wipes on the Cart, and again when I leave for my hands...at home? Wash my hands a lot!...Haven't had the Flu in years....Use Listerine to gargle also and Lysol spray around the house (especially when someone comes in that is sick).....

We all know that $$ is very dirty....so those that handle $$ need to wash their hands more often.

Can we get our money back? (defective product) :giggle:
My insurance paid for my shot. I only started getting the flu shot when my husband was ill, so as not to put him at risk if I did get the flu (which I've never have gotten). I still get the shot now because my daughter who live with me is a nursing student, so I don't want to put her at risk (or her put me at risk).

Yeah, talk about money back, I got the shot and the flu this past winter, I want my money back!

It was on the news a few times that the flu shots were only 19% effective this winter . I was thinking of getting one but when I heard this I said the hell with it. I only had one flu shot , I was health aide and my company wanted all health aides to get shot b/c there was bad flu going around. It was to protests our clients and ourselves . The flu could had killed some our clients who were very elderly , 100 plus yo.

I have shot every yeAr my son who a doc don't.i guess that says something but 19pc got be better than nothing

I was told that the flu wouldn't be quite so bad if you got the shot and the flu too. That turned out to be a true statement, as the hubby, who didn't get the vaccine was much sicker than I was. That was only fair as he brought it home from somewhere he had been, and he's not careful about hand washing!

You are better off to have a flu shot than without one so it will make flu more less severe and not require hospitalization.

I took flu shot because I'm college student and spread of flu is very common on college campus.
