Today I took my daughter for an audiology appointment to get fitted for her hearing aids. While talking, we got on the subject of Cochlear Implants. The doctor told me that she is eligible for an implant but not the curved one that is placed through the cochlea. My daughter has no cochlea, so they said for her she could receive a flat, straight cochlear implant in that space instead. Has anyone heard of this or know what the name of it is? I was looking online to find some information but couldnt find anything. Thanks!!

Cochlear has the option of a curved array which is normally standard for most cases. MEd-El uses different versions of straight arrays. Both have have Split Electrode Arrays available.

If your daughter has complete cochlear aplasia (no cochlear structures but intact auditory nerve) the audiologist may be referring to an Auditory Brainstem Implant but I don't know if those are approved for children without cochleas.
Another possibility is an implant that rests directly on the auditory nerve Auditory nerve implant could drastically benefit deaf individuals -- Engadget but that technology hasn't been fully developed yet.

If your daughter truly has no cochlea, hearing aids will not be of benefit because there is no mechanism to transmit sounds from the ear to the brain.

I bet your daughter has cochlear dysplasia- a incompletely formed cochlea. In this case hearing aids may be of benefit and a cochlear implant could also be of benefit.

Be sure to get the audiologist to explain EVERYTHING. Even if you have no background in science, your audiologist should be able to explain things so that you completely understand your daughter's diagnosis and her options.

Since your daughter is young, the most important thing is establishing language, whether visual or auditory (in my opinion- the more senses through which a kid learns language the better).

Good luck and keep us informed.

An ENT (Ear, nose, and throat) surgeon who specialize Cochlear implant can determine and tell you about it.

in the meanwhile, start communicating with her in Sign languages. It's ok if you don't know it. We all babytalk to our children anyway, so learning how sign is a little like babytalk.
