My son will have his first visit to dentist's office next week on Monday. Any tips?

Use a dentist who specializes in children's services.

Don't act nervous about it; kids can sense parents' feelings and attitudes.

Explain what will happen but don't go into too much detail, or don't dwell on it too much.

Let your child bring a favorite stuffed animal.

Offer a reward for after the appointment. Example: "After the dentist appointment, we will stop at the Dollar Store and you can pick out two toys." (Don't offer a food treat because your child might not want to eat right after; a toy, book, or DVD movie is better.)

Keep a positive attitude! :P

What Reba said is very good. How about explaining to the child it may hurt a little and that the parent(s)/guardian(s) will be there the whole time?

Thanks for the tips, Reba! They are good ideas.

Im going to try to get dentist book for children so we can read together and prepare him for his first visit. My son and I have the same dentist appt so obviously, I will be going with him.

Try to find a "pediatric dentist" who specialize in children dentistry from your yellow pages.

Good question!

Absolutely do NOT let your child's dentist to fill up some mercury amalgam (gray fillings). It is a well known toxic that create health problem later in the life. Best to fill with a clear plastic fillings.

Do NOT believe your dentist if he said that the amalgam is safe - he is deadly wrong. Find a good and honest dentist who really understand about the issue.

White pure plastic filling is good. I have the whites on my fillings, and I never have that problem for 6 years. Clear fillings are safe. The news came in about the clear fillings, and that was last year or this past spring.

There is a problem that a few dentist companies mixed with amalgram and plastic fillings. This one I really do not understand because they want to make a profit. You have to make a best judgement and get more info about the plastic fillings.

You as the parent if you have the mercury fillings, then it is unfortuante that you need them to be removed. Look up on google about the amalgram removal. It takes a very long time to get rid of mercury out of your body - perhaps 10 years or more. You can ask your doctor for a mercury blood test that tells you how much mercury in your body.

If you do not believe me, guess what at a school lab if someone spills a mercury liquid in the classroom, all students in the entire school are immediately leave the building until the firemen clean it up. This is not a joke. A perfect example a federal law, officially, prohibits all mercury thermometers in all stores.

Normally, a child's first visit to the dentist is just a check up and a lesson on how to take care of the teeth. They don't usually do dental work during the first visit, unless there is a serious problem (such as a broken tooth) that needs immediate fixing.

this is one I have

never ever be in the room with the child as the drama of your nerves and the drama that they know which buttons to push .

I am told that Mine act so much better with me out in the room after the intros and the general stuff .

and Reba is also correct is a easy visit the 1st time and

my other tip don't say a word about pain cause they may not have any or nothing getting done what will cause it so no needed stress

Yeah, talk to him about how horrible the dentist is... make him scream for his life! ;)

Actually, I don't know. I guess you could say that the dentist is a good man and that there is nothing to worry about.
