Firefighters rescue deaf man from fire at Sellwood Inn Pub | OregonLive.com
Firefighters saved a deaf man from a fast-moving blaze early Saturday morning at an apartment above Sellwood Inn Pub.
The fire spread from the back of Sellwood Inn Pub at 8301 S.E. 17th Ave., according to Paul Corah, spokesman for Portland Fire & Rescue. The business is on the first floor, and apartments are above.
Firefighters arrived at 3:20 a.m. and checked two second-floor apartments that were filled with heavy smoke. They forced open one of the doors and found a man in his late 30s sleeping in his bed. He was deaf and completely unaware of the fire, Corah said. The man, whose name was not released, was assessed on scene for possible smoke inhalation.
The fire was started in a plastic bucket where smoking materials were improperly thrown away, according to an investigation. Damage was estimated at $25,000.
Though this apartment did not have one, there are smoke alarms that emit a high intensity strobe light to alert the deaf and hard-of-hearing. More information for people with disabilities can be found through the Oregon State Fire Marshal.
