My fingerspelling is okay (except for retention), but reading other signers is not so easy because at Deaf speed the messege zooms by too fast and comprehension is dead.

So today I was surfing and I found this product that addresses the problem.

From reading the site, do you feel I should look into purchasing the product? The applications are called Fingerspelling 1 & 2.

Thanks for your help! :bye:

I've found for things like videos, it's better to see if you can hire them - instead of buying them - if you haven't already done so I'd suggest you contact a school for the Deaf in your area, your public library, and Deaf community centre - all of which might have fingerspelling tapes you can hire or borrow out. I know our Local Deaf Centre has a lending library and resource centre for these things.

Practicing in the mirror helps some, so does visualize letter groupings instead of each letter - I "see" the fingerspelled word "BATTERY" as a single sign, not it's individual letters. Also personally I think it's much better to get very comfortable seeing short words, then build the length a letter at a time .... receptive skills are a matter of practice , practice, practice. One option is to find a friend who can spell to you !

To be able "see" the fingerspelled word as a sign is just incredible to me...that'll take a whole lot of practicing!

Good advice. Thank you Anij!!

re:BATTERY , I don't do that with all words (see the spelling as a sign... but with many loan signs I do ( JOB, BUS, CAR, DOG, BATTERY, WHAT, DO, OF)
One thing that helps alot is learning to see the distinctive shape of the word ... we do it naturally with written english.

It takes practice though (and I mean years, not weeks or months) .. and honestly - I'm dyslexic a little so I have problems from time to time with fingerspelling too

Yes RDC_girl I am aware of that helpful site. I use it everyday. :)

awesome... I have applied to the terp program and I use it all the time to practice my receptive skills :)
