It's been a long wait but I went to my final consultation appointment with both my Audi and my surgeon a few days ago and finally have my surgery scheduled. It'll be on November 11.

The only thing I have to do is a physical on Nov. 2. I'm not in the best health of my life but I don't think that'll be a problem. My biggest worry is that flu that's going around. Someone close to me has it now and I'm wearing a mask when ever I'm around them in hopes I'll be able to avoid it. It would suck to get the flu right before the surgery which is only 2 weeks away.

I went with the Nucleus 5. I tried them all on and I do like the smaller size of this new model. I have small ears.

I posted my background elseware here on AD but just to recap. I've been HOH all my life but my hearing was pretty much "normal" with hearing aids until my late teens. I went to normal public schools and class rooms and so forth. Between 15 and 20 years ago my hearing dropped from profoundly HOH to deaf. Right now I can only hear very loud low pitched sounds in my left ear. I haven't heard speech in about 17 years or so. I'm now 38 years old.

Just thought I'd share this with you all. I'm getting one in my left ear. If any of you have any advice or want to share anything about what I'm about to go through I'd love to read it.

sorry no advice for you since I do not have CI but good luck, Ron!

Sorry I dont have advice for you. I want to say Good Luck. I saw the Nucelus 5 yesterday. They look neat. Have you thought of picking what color for your processor?

Yes, I picked brown because it matches my hair color. The Flesh color ones should be called Albino flash. It's very bright. :)

I may pick charcoal as my color when the trade up program starts in December. If I wanted to show off there is skins already available for the new model. The flesh color is now called sand for the new model. You also can have different colors for the coil and the cable as well.

i would pick charcoal because i like the color, dark grey aka charcoal. i will pick it soon. I would love to pick the color processor cover either hot pink or Zebra aka black and white. but i haven't ask more quesitons yet. i will find out more about it from my audiologist.

I actually have an idea for the covers. A friend of mine is a make up artist (Special effects) and makes masks. He's one of those guys who could make you look like someone else with make up, latex, fake beards and so forth. So my idea is to put hair on one of those covers that match my real hair. So basically the CI will be invisible because it'll blend it with my real hair (I have long hair).

It's don't think it's necessary but I'm an entertainer/magician and on stage costume is important. No big deal, just something I'm going to experiment with. I have no desire to hide my CI, in fact I'll probably flaunt it. LOL

Ron,

when your friend make the cover. please take a picture of it. I want to see how does it turns out look like. I bet it looks nice, and blend with your hair very well. I am still new to the CI thingy. cool

Ron, best of luck on your surgery! I'll be anxious to hear how your CI works for you. I hope that the CI is all that you'd hoped for and more! :fingersx: <-- crossing my fingers for good luck

Congratulations Ron! I hope you'll keep us updated after surgery, activation and beyond!!! :D

Ron,

Good Luck on your Surgery keep us posted.

For after the surgery my advice is:

1. Throat Lozenges

2. Sleep with extra pillow to keep head elevated or sleep in a recliner

3. Make sure you have pain meds ready. You may not need them but make sure you have them. Don't wait too long to take something if you need it.

Finally, just remember that at first things will sound strange but it gets better over time. Patience is a virtue for the CI Journey.

I thought you had no residual hearing and is why you stopped wearing HAs 17 years ago? If you can still hear something in the left ear, id try the latest HA in that ear and get a CI in the right ear. Youll be able to go bimodel and hear with both HA and CI. Hope this helps.

Good luck Ron, and do keep us posted. I have always liked your posts and even gave a copy of your what its like to be hoh to my VR counselor. Hope you have success and a speedy recovery. (So we can see more of your posts) lol

Thank you everyone.

Well, one of my fears might have become a reality. I woke up this morning with sore throat and cough. So I might have that flu. After my doctor appointment I'll contact my audi and surgeon to see what I should do. I hope it won't post pone it too long. I have a physical on Monday and I don't think they'll want to give it to me if I do that the flu. I'll find out later today.

When I say I have little hearing in my left ear it's very, very little. For example if there was a live rock band I might hear the drums sometimes. If I'm standing next to a lour motor cycle I might pick up a faint hum. But it's so faint I might even be more feeling it rather then hearing it. I scored zero on speech in my hearing test.

Thanks again.

Ron

Well, because I had that flu last week I'll have to wait a little longer. My pre-surgery physical was suppose to be last Monday but I had the flu to the physical is today in a couple of hours from now. My surgery is now next Wednesday (Nov. 18).

So all is still good, just have to wait another week.

Just keeping you up to speed. Thanks for all the support.
