Hi,
My name is Monique, I am a film maker currently writing a script about a deaf woman in an abusive relationship. I have joined this forum because I would love to learn more about your lives and experiences. I would also love to hear your opinions on media today in order to better represent you and to make something that you could all enjoy watching too.
Things I am particularly interested in hearing more about is anyone in a relationship where one of the partners can hear, and the other is deaf. I would love to know how you met, what your every day life is like. What is hard in the relationship, what is easy and anything that you think could be interesting to know.
On top of that I am interested in your every day lives. What kinds of things do you guys do for a living? Do you have your own quirky ways prepared for communicating with people who don’t understand sign language? What things do people do that insults you (this could be people who consciously insult you or people who subconsciously insult you through misguided well meaning…), what kind of behavior do you really appreciate from people who don’t understand sign language?
I would also love to know about the kinds of things you perceive in the world, especially things that you think people with hearing might miss. Do you think you perceive emotions and body language better?
(I know sorry, personal questions… please only disclose what you feel comfortable with!)
I am also really interested in hearing your opinions on today’s media and how you think you are represented and/or catered for in the media. Are you happy with the way media has been made ‘accessible’ for you? Are you happy with the way deaf people have been portrayed in film (or do you think perhaps that you are missing a voice in that medium?) Are there ways that films could be made in order to be more enjoyable for you? In my film I am hoping to weave two stories in to it. One that people who can hear will understand, and a supporting deeper story told in sign language that only deaf people and people who understand sign language will comprehend. Can any of you recommend any films where you feel like sign language has been used effectively?
I would appreciate any help you can offer me, whether it is a single sentence, an imparting of wisdom, or your complete life story. I just want to learn how I can better serve you and tell a truthful story.
If you do not wish to post in a public forum, please feel free to message me!
Thanks!
Monique
