To Prevent Doctors From Pulling Plug On Son

A father in Houston engaged in a three-hour standoff with police to try to prevent doctors from pulling the plug on his brain-dead son.

George Pickering II was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for entering Houston’s Tomball Regional Medical Center with a gun and threatening to use it. His son, 27-year-old George Pickering III, was in critical condition following a stroke, and doctors had begun a process that slowly took him off of life support.

“They were moving too fast. The hospital, the nurses, the doctors,” Pickering told KPRC-TV. “I knew if I had three or four hours that night that I would know whether George was brain-dead.”

Hospital staff was reportedly concerned about Pickering’s behavior, as he had been belligerent and heavily intoxicated earlier that day.

Pickering said his decision to threaten hospital staff was the final option.

“At that point I had blinders on. All I knew I just needed to have this time with George,” he said. His son, he said, squeezed his hand several times on command -- which signaled to him that he wasn’t in the shape that doctors believed he was in. Pickering’s son later came out of a coma and made a full recovery.

Pickering was arrested and charged for the incident, but the charges were later reduced.

“There was a law broken, but it was broken for all the right reasons. I'm here now because of it,” Pickering’s son said. “It was love, it was love."
