"It's been a journey that began within two days after her birth," said Matthew, a 34-year-old from Fairview who passed along his genetic hearing problems to his third daughter.
When he and his wife Mary-Jeanne saw that baby Annika's ear canals were extremely narrow, they knew she might one day not be able to hear fire alarms or babbling brooks.
"It's a process of loss, a process of hope and now a reawakening of joy," Matthew said, two days after their operations as the bandages were unwrapped.
