CIENEGA SPRINGS, Ariz. --
A snorkeler in the Colorado River nearly jumped out of his skin when he came across what appeared to be two skeletons underwater. Authorities later discovered not only that the skeletons were fake, but that they were sitting on lawn chairs and wearing sunglasses.
The La Paz County Sheriff's Office got a call about "skeletal remains" and went to investigate Monday, ABC News reports.
Deputies believed the skeletons could be real and sent a dive team to where they were spotted, by a loading dock near Park, Arizona.
It turned out the skeletons were fake and had been strategically placed on lawn chairs that were tied to underwater rocks. Firefighter Eric Foerstner, who took the video, observed that the skeletons were having an underwater "tea party," according to the sheriff's office.
One skeleton was holding a sign that could shed light on the joke. It appears to say, "Bernie livin' the dream in the river." Lt. Curtis Bagby believes this could be a reference to the movie Weekend at Bernie's. The sign also indicates they were placed there in August 2014.
Bagby told ABC News he doesn't want people to think it's OK to put other items in the river, but he's not too concerned about the skeletons.
"I don't think they were trying to set up anything to scare anyone," he said. "I think they were gonna try to be funny."
Where will the skeletons go now? Bagby said he might try to add a little levity by setting them up outside the sheriff's office.
