May 16, 2003 — Relatives of a former White House intern who says she had an affair with President John F. Kennedy 41 years ago say they were surprised to hear the revelations from the former New Jersey resident.
Intern Confirms Affair with JFK
Marion "Mimi" Fahnestock, 60, told the New York Daily News that she was the intern mentioned in a new biography about Kennedy, but she would not comment further about the relationship. Instead, she handed out a prepared statement that said she had a sexual relationship with the president from June 1962 to November 1963.
Fahnestock _ whose maiden name was Mimi Beardsley _ was raised in Monmouth County, living mostly in the Red Bank area. She was quite active in the area's social scene and was presented in 1961 at the Rumson Debutante Ball before she attended Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Conn.
She later lived in the Navesink section of Middletown with her husband, Anthony, before they divorced. He died in 1993, and she now works as an administrator at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York.
Fahnestock's brother, James Beardsley, still lives in Atlantic Highlands but would not comment on his sister's claims. However, another relative said she was surprised by the announcement, noting that Fahnestock rarely talked about her time in the White House.
"I laughed (because) at first I thought it was a joke," said Anne Ellis of Middletown, who identified herself as Fahnestock's aunt. "She only talked about how small the (White House) room was where the Teletype machine was kept and how many messages the president got at night."
Kennedy is known to have had numerous extramarital liaisons, but "An Unfinished Life," the biography by historian Robert Dallek published this week, contains the first report of an affair with an intern.
Dallek said he learned of the affair from a 1964 oral history interview with White House aide Barbara Gamarekian, whose account was sealed until recently. Gamarekian recalled only the intern's first name.
She said the young woman traveled with Kennedy on official trips and appeared to have a special relationship with him.
