Unfortunately, it's rather so common that many people don't think like you said that money is just a piece of paper... they, whoever think money is mere like gold, are prone to be selfish or have a sort of a misconception with it.
I sometime had to remind that to some certain friends or people whenever associated with the business or investment discussion whenever something related brought up.
