In the past, I've made a lot of one on one barter deals such as trading a bike for a lawn mower. I'm wondering if any of you've been involved in a 3 way barter deal and how you liked it. I've never been involved in one, though.

An example is that I would give Joe my bike. Joe will give Matt his snowblower. Matt will give me his pedal car. I'm hoping to be involved in a 3 way deal or 2 for 2014. That would be a great way to make friends!!!

No that is NOT a good way to make friends in my opinion for what its worth.

We've done direct barter but no 3-way barter.

I've been involved in a couple with friends-- trading stuff, but never a bicycle. Maybe someday that'll happen, as I DO have one I'd like to trade someday.

I've done direct barter but never 3 way. It seems like it would be worthwhile, because a person who has what I want may not need what I have to offer, but a third person might need what I have and have something for the person who has what I want. It seems like it could be hard to arrange though. Finding a person who has the right things and wants the right things probably isn't easy. And even if you find the person, having 3 separate interactions that need to happen for everything to be even, that probably makes things complicated. What if someone doesn't show up, or decides they don't want whatever they were going to get after all, etc. Dealing with one person can be challenging enough.

So I don't know. It's interesting, sort of exciting, but I'm a little leery.

It might be an interesting project, to set up a program to try to organize the offerings and needs of people interested. But as soon as I start to think about it, it gets really complicated. Maybe you can't find 3 people who have/want the right things, but you can find 4 or 5. Watching my brain explode in slow motion:0

Part of my brain wants to say "that's why we have money." But another part says it would be really cool to have a local multi-person barter program that could bring people together who might have something worthwhile to offer even if they're low on cash.
