Ellen Opens Up About Her Past

By César G. Soriano, USA TODAY

"I just feel so lucky with everything in my life right now," Ellen DeGeneres told the magazine.

Comedian Ellen DeGeneres was sexually molested by her stepfather as a teenager, the talk show host says in Allure magazine.

DeGeneres, 46, says the abuse began at age 16 or 17 soon after her mother, Betty DeGeneres, had a mastectomy for breast cancer. Ellen says her breasts were fondled by Betty's husband under the guise of performing a lump check. She does not identify the man but says he is now dead.

"A few weeks later, he tried to do it again. And I kept saying, 'No! No! You can't keep doing this!' But ... it escalated into other things," she says in the June issue of Allure (on newsstands May 24). "He tried to break down the door to my bedroom. ... I had to kick a window out and escape and sleep in a hospital all night long."

DeGeneres also discussed the pain she felt after her breakup with actress Anne Heche. "Anne broke my heart into a million pieces. I've never spoken to her since she left," DeGeneres says. "When Anne left, I'd wake up in the morning and my eyes would just immediately fill up with tears."

DeGeneres, who call herself "a serial monogamist," is now dating actress Portia De Rossi, 32.

"I pray that Portia and I are together the rest of our lives," she tells Allure. "I never thought my life would have turned out this way. To have money. Or to have a gorgeous girlfriend. I just feel so lucky with everything in my life right now."

Why she tells us this, now? To get more tv ratings?

I am not worried or shock about her. It is her personal and her fame on TV. Like Rosie ODonnell and others who fame on TV, too.

I had read about her life and know about her past is very common to people in the world. I think it not be needed to detail about her life.

I am happy she goes tho than suffers inside her feeling.

Well, everyone know who she really is by now. She is a famous actress/comedian with her fame. She is not ashamed to tell her side of story. She is just bein' honest with herself. :)

Well if she keeps telling people her business.... then people
will be all over her ass....
saying, "that is not a good reason to be gay, look at Oprah!"

I do agree with MizzDeaf, I know it should not be so much of drama if anyone tell about their past even if they are famous. WHY obessed with famous people with their past even they are just normal people like us. It dont matters if she become gay and it may not be reason why she become gay because of molesting and it would be no different than straight people being molested as well. Believe me, I know those people would have nightmares from bad things and evenually they need help. It truly sad to see people suffer from bad things but it good thing that they come and admit that they went though it, I believe they are spill out the problems then can begin their healings and move on. BUT they will never forget those bad moments and hope it wouldnt happen to others in the future no matter what race, sex, or any other group. My cousin went through this and I can see how hard it is no matters who is famous or not.

I agree with MizzDeaf and Shiva, :thumb:

I don't think it has anything to do with her rating and being famous. Everyone of us tell our stories from time to time.

If people want to be all over her because of her history then I guess they have nothing better to do on their own time. To me I don't care about anyone's past because each one of us have a past too. It sadden me when children were sexually molested by someone they know and that sicken me very much, because nobody should go through that.

It is good to see that even famous people experience the same tragedies in their lives that the rest of us do. Shows that they are human as well. However, some people tend to "tell their stories" a little too often and to the point that they become *yawn*. There is a difference between sharing and whining. Nobody likes a whiner.

Everyone shares their stories or their past from time to time, and if someone thinks they're whining too much cause they happen to repeat, then they don't have to read it, simple as that... :thumb:

It is also terrible to hear about Ellen's past but I wish her all the happiness!

Personally, I think Miss P is right. It does have a lot to do with the ratings, or a movie, or whatever project that particular celebrity is promoting. Don't get me wrong. I think it's a good thing when someone comes out and speaks about the horrors in their past, but I also don't fail to miss the benefit of doing so. Drama sells in this country. People like to hear the sordid details, and if that person is well known, all the better.

Just my two cents worth

yeah I liked Ellen and Rosie O' Donnell
because they were funny...
that is why they were up there....

But they ain't Oprah... Oprah is good at that...

Ellen and Rosie O'Donnell want talk shows so badly...
but they have to accept that people
are sick of talk shows now... cause it is an old gig.

Now people are tuning in reality shows...
and I suggest that Ellen gets her own reality show...

Can't just play the sympathy card and make
people watch talk show.

I don't care if she is gay.... but now oh well she is too desperate, it really turned off people.

true i agree with u.... :smash:

Ellen is actually emotional woman (aka biplar disorder). I have read about her life in her own book.

She is same another people in the world. Nothing is different....

I believe that any actress/actor become famous and make a lot of money. Then, he/she would be ready to tell his/her personal life. Otherwise, they will be kicked out of the show if they are not famous and telling their problem in public at the same time. It is all about money security reason that they want to protect their future.

I think Ellen just feel more comfortable to share and express herself. I think she feel that her audience is almost like a second family to her.

After all, Ellen is one of the most respected lesbians around.

I don't think that's it. Her show is doing well. What I think the deal is, she is trying to keep her ratings high. It takes a lot to do so, so therefore, her agent or somebody talked to her, and floated the idea out there and she decided why not? That's how it's usually done, anyway. It's usually the idea of an agent or whomever.

You know, though. I don't really care that they do it. In fact, I think it's a good thing, sometimes. But, it's HOW you do it that I take issue with. Roseanne is a good example of how not to come out with personal stuff. She was hooked up with that baffoon Tom Arnold at the time, and it was just a disaster. On the flip side, Oprah came out with her past, but did it with class. Same with Rosie O'Donnell. I admire people with class.

that right oceanbreeze and banjo I do agree with you. I think she is great person (no matter if she is famous or not) and admitted that she got molested is truely brave enough to step out publicity and it could have help people out there to step up, admit, and hopefully get some help.

Eh. I will be honest. I never cared much for Ellen Degeneres. I have nothing against her. I just never thought she was very funny. But, I do respect her, and where she's been. She's obviously has been through a lot of crap, and I'm glad to see she is happy now. :)

yeah that the point, it dont matter if she is famous or not, at least she admit it just like other normal people would do. I just believe they should treat her as human being not just as celebrity so you know what i mean by that? dont you? oceanbreeze
