Edmonton deaf community fights for return of voice - Edmonton - CBC News
Edmonton's deaf community is pleading with the federal government to return the voice relay service.
Video Relay Service uses video conferencing to connect deaf people to an interpreter who translates sign language into the spoken word.
The service allows deaf people to speak with their doctor or banker, for example.
The service recently ended after an eighteen-month trial involving three cities -- including Edmonton.
More than 100 people showed up at a meeting Wednesday to come up with a plan for lobbying Ottawa to continue the service.
