Driving and Emergency Vehicles (Help Needed)

Would such a device be helpful?

  • Sounds ok, but wouldn't buy one for me

AllDeaf Community,

Let me first start off my introducing myself. My name is Steve and I am currently attending Texas Tech University working on my Masters degree in Engineering. My proposed Master's thesis is on developing a device to help aid people whom have limited hearing and/or are deaf. This device would some how let them know that an emergency vehicle is approaching and from where and how far away.

My sister-in-law is deaf and is soon to get her drivers license (yeah!). I asked her about this and she seemed pretty excited and thought it would help and sounds cool. I wanted to poll people here to see if they think this sounds like something you would want/desire, if something like this ALREADY exists, or if this is just plain stupid. I eventually think this should be something that EVERY car has regardless of hearing or not.

Thanks for you input! Happy Holidays!!

:welcome: to AD! Why not create a device that you can put inside any vehicle that can detect an emergency vehicle thru radar and then start flashing to alert the driver? I think not only deaf people will benefit from it...hearing people would probably too due to playing the radio loud.

GM and Chrysler already have it, and I don't see it anymore I think it is just waste of money. Deafies are very sensitve with their sights, hearing people just simply don't understand that deaf DO have much degree of sensitive when it comes to visual. I have no problem with dealing whatever is in back, front, left, right, above, below and I JUST know it! Whats even worse many hearing people wants sound proof interior... whats the point of this concern?
To me, this idea is really pointless.

I think an Emergency Vehicle Alert system should be required in all vehicles. It should have both a visual alert and an auditory alert that overrides the vehicle's stereo system!

It's not Deaf drivers that are the problem, it's the hearing ones.

Deafies usually are best drivers because we uses eyes all the times and be on alert for emergencies...
Most of hearies was puzzled how can deafies drive?? All i respond is that "Can you drive a car with Blindfolded???".. They responded "NO"... I say then I rest my case...
