Can women over 40 have a downs syndrome babies ?

I wasn't sure if I'll ever have one due to PCOS but I have talked to the GYN, she said I still can, but confused why my old other doctor said I can't...

But my man feared that if he does get me pregnant, he's afraid that we might have a downs syndrome baby cuz I'm in my 40's, I told him to stop saying negative stuff to me or else we'll ended up havin' one, geez what's up with him ?

Pepe LePew,

From General Chat to General Health.

My paternal grandmother was just 43 years old when she gave birth to her last child (my uncle) in 1964. My uncle is a/has Downs Syndrome.

My aunt was only 38 when she gave birth to a healthy boy in 1980. I believe it was a natural birth.

With today's medical being so advanced, there are cases where women over 35 are able to have children without any health problem. If you and your significant other are wanting to do this, I advise you to see a specialist about this.

My Aunt married late at 36 and had first male child at 37 ... he is a Downs Syndrome. She also gave birth to 2 more children who are normal.

My sister-in-law gave birth to 4 sons when she was 29 to 41 and all are normal. They are 3 years apart and the last one is 6 years. She has lupus since in her early 20s so it didn't stop her. :) Some people are lucky and some don't. It's really a gamble.

My husband's friend and his wife had a son with DS, she got pregnant with him at 38 then she got pregnant again at 40 with a healthy daughter. My sister got pregnant at 43 and had a healthy baby daughter. Yes it is gamble to have a healthy baby or not.

It varies on the individual.

However, I've been told by doctors that the older you are... the greater the risks are. But like I said, it varies.

You're right, It varies.

Also, It is always mostly recommended for women who are over 35 to get the amino test during their pregnancies to detect any deformities or any other defects.

Yep got that right it does varies for each women. I just greatful my daughter was born healthy since I am over 35. Everything in life will always be a risk no matter what you do. :)

Yeah, Jolie is right; after age 35 the ratio of incidences of DS increases. I not sure how off this statement is as it has been while since last reading, but incidence of DS births goes as high as 1 in 30-50 live births after age 50. There are mildly invasive diagnostic tests though such as an amniocentesis (like Jolie mentioned) and you can completely analyze and diagnose Neural tube defecits, chromosomal abnormalities, or even dominant/recessive diseases.
