Ditto here in FL, Dix. Anita Bryant, a well known actress in the 70s, got on her bully pulpit and proclaimed that gays were unfit to adopt children here in FL. As a result, a law went on the books stipulating such. Thanks to a very courageoous gay couple who wanted to adopt, this law either, has been, or will soon be history!
Your experience in that church is ironic, though, eh? In my opinion, throwing your Bible at him would have problem been a good idea!
