Does your voice fluctuate when you speak?

I hope this is the right section to ask the question here...I don't sign so I rely on speaking as a primary method to communicate with people. However, I have an "accent" (of course) and what I've noticed is that my voice changes. For instance, my speech sounds clear and intelligible one day, and then the next day, it sounds....terrible.

It seems that I forget how to pronounce a lot of words one day and tomorrow, I suddenly remember the pronunciation. Could this be because I don't talk as much? This summer, I will be undergoing speech therapy but I would like to know why this occurs. Thanks!

No idea.

I've found that to be true with me too. A lot of variables can cause the fluctuation-- wearing hearing aids/not wearing them, Time of day- how rested I am vs how tired I am or if I'm sick. Nerves.

I've been known to talk too loud, too soft, too fast, too slow, mumble, trip over words (and mispronounce).

I have also been asked if I was originally from Boston (I've never lived there nor been there). once had an internet pal (wonder where he is these days) who is hard of hearing- he told me that he was once asked if he was German/from Germany. He's from Kentucky!

Happens to me all the time. I tend to speak too loud at times. I'm totally deaf and have horrific tinnitus. At times I think I try to talk over all the noise going on in my head. Plus I do spend a great amount of time alone, so I'm not using my voice then. I know exactly what you mean about knowing the word you want to say but can't quite get it to come out, like I totally forget how to pronounce it.

I never know when I'm whispering, talking normal or too loud....it does get embarrassing some times....so don't ask me to tell ya a "secret"....could be the whole neighborhood would hear it....:giggle:

I've only been deaf three years and the whispering thing gets me into trouble a lot. :giggle: My hubby, mom and girls sign a quick "stop" when I am talking too loud.

So when the moment comes where you suddenly forgot to pronounce a particular word, how do you resolve that problem?

For instance, I was talking to a friend about summer school and said that I was going to take Economics. I used to say this word perfectly fine but yesterday, when I was attempting to say "economics", I totally forgot how to!!

When a speech-language pathologist starts therapy, I'll ask her this question!

Never forget anything, but there are some letters and sounds that I never get right. But completely consistent since childhood.

The main problem is I often am not actually making a loud enough noise when talking, and then that's a bit embarrassing, when someone tells me, "I know you think you are talking, but there isn't any sound!"

I had lived in Boson and near Boston and people had asked me if I had a French ,or English accent . I was told I had pretty Spanish accent and person that told this me was Mexican . I was also told I made my 'R' with a Boston accent. I find that true with me too if I am tried I will mispronounce
words and I was told I talk too loud and fast .

It happens more when I am speaking with my hubby. I guess he and I talk more the me and other people. So I just say...."What the heck is that word again" and go from there.

I play it down....(forgetting how to speak a word that I don't use often)....most times, whomever I'm conversing with, fills the word in...if not...then I write it down.

My volume fluctuates depending on how much I wear my hearing aids. Hearing my voice makes me more attentive to my volume. I like taking my hearing aids off all the time though. I've been told I sound like a little kid and I've gotten the German question also. I have a habit of slipping into a British accent if I'm around someone with a British accent, but I have NO idea how that came about though. Maybe too much Parent Trap with Lohan as a kid.

Like Bottesini, there are sounds that I'll probably never make correctly, like r's and s's.

It happens to me all the time, which is part of the reason why I'm so insecure about my voice. I can never pronounce the hard g sounds as in "giggle" correctly and I can't say the z sounds either. It's frustrating because I can't actually hear a single letter sound being produced in the voice box. I grew up taking speech classes and they always forced me to touch their throat to feel the vibration which never really helped. :dunno2:

Ah yes-- I knew someone from college who was from the Boston area- you definitely could tell she was too with how she talked. Her heritage is Irish too lol.

as for not being able to get out the word you WANT to say but can't.. I have a hard time with that- and many times I find myself SIGNING the word but not SAYING it..lil awkward when you are either on the phone or with a hearing person lol. I try to think fast and think of something to substitute- doesn't always work though- especially when I do interviews as I'm already a wreck anyway lol.

In grade school my dad did his version of speech therapy, which worked, then I had it a couple times at school, I used to think this is not for 'me', this was way before I knew the true state of my hearing. Though when I got those hearing tests I would throw them away before my dad who's deaf (not sure what I was afraid of) could receive them. Then my speech and sentences plummeted in middle school. The more I talk and the louder my hearing aids are the better my speech gets.

I had speech therapy in grade school , there where about 4 students in the class and one speech therapist . One kid had a lisp and I end up coping him.
It was a joke trying to help 4 students that all had difference problem with their speech.

People just know how upset I am by its pitch.

I know what strong is talking about forgetting how to say the word n being inconsistent in saying word one on different days even if its same word. Im the same way

I cant pronounce a lot of words correctly being I cannot and never could hear the sounds, so I have an accent as well because of it, some think its cool, others think Im not from around here, sometimes I even like it myself...it defined me to who I am and how I talk. Im stubborn so I dont care what they think of my speech.

I quite often over compensate and speak too quietly because I'm afraid of speaking too loudly.
