Whooping should be banned beause it excludes deaf people, Nation Union of Students say

Students who whoop, cheer and clap should face “consequences” because they are excluding deaf people, delegates at the National Union of Students conference said.

Audience members were repeatedly warned that they must cease whooping to express support for a speaker, because it has a “serious impact” on the accessibility of the conference.

Delegates at the NUS annual conference in Brighton were encouraged to use “jazz hands” instead of clapping - where students wave their hands in the air - as this is deemed a more inclusive form of expression....

What do you think about this?

Well this was an interesting read. I don't know of I am bias because I dislike whooping and cheering to start with. I always thought the act was weird. But it would be nice to see what others think.

What? That's really odd. I've seen deaf people whooping and cheering (at Gallaudet football games)... so don't get why they're all "don't exclude deaf people". I do think it's a nice idea to suggest the "jazz hands" or rather 'deaf applause' and encourage that but the whole thing is kind of nuts to suggest whooping and cheering is not accessible...?!

I'm with DD. I don't think it needs to be banned. Let each individual do what they prefer.

That is the strangest article- is this for real? :) By this logic, I propose all spoken seminars, conferences and lectures be banned for the same reason- exclusion of Deaf people. Why should we have to use captions and interpreters?! It seems a little overboard. I don't think I ever felt like audience reactions were oppressive. So long as the presentation has an interpreter, they always show me people are now making noise. I don't know but the article seemed to look a little like a troll, get people all fired up over something that I assume nobody is concerned about. How did you feel when you read it? Kind of a non-problem? :)

Yes, there are many news items these years about things designed to get people up in arms against the notion of 'political correctness.' It's click bait. You would have to search for deaf people who cared about this issue. Most of us have much more basic things to be concerned about.

Jazz hands? When I do they yell at me to stop dancing on the seats.

I think when people are just looking for more things that "offend" that they can do away with, they need to seriously get a life and leave the rest of us the heck alone....

Well, Fist pumping is whooping.... they need to find better things to complain about...SMDH !
