I currently have Alcatel One Touch Fierce phone. I'm planning to buy LG Optimus F3Q phone this week. Once I get the new phone, I may sell my current phone. I think I'll want to get something cheap from T-Mobile to use for spare phone. Maybe a Mytouch 3G Slide or something like that to use for spare phone in case something happened to my phone.

My question is: do you believe in having a spare phone? It's great to have, but is it asking for trouble? You know, if you have a spare phone, you are essentially expecting your current phone to break or get lost. Does having a spare phone jinx you in some ways ?

I would love to have a spare phone only if I could find one that work with my HA. I would like a backup encase my phone dies on me. I have old fashion phones they're landline , I do not have any cellphone . I would just keep misplacing it.

I've never thought of having an extra phone. One phone cost enough for me. Besides, I don't need another one to keep track off.

Considering how fragile smartphones are, personally it applies to me. They are very expensive to just have as a backup, so I have a Blackberry I used previously just in case.

It's a nice idea but I agree with Reba. If I had a second phone it likely would add to the cost of my bill. I see that with a friend of mine (omg.. don't get me started on how ATT is treating her right now... UGH!). I used to have a landline AND the sidekick3 (data plan only) but dropped the landline when I switched to the myTouch and added voice minutes (kind of regretting that now... lol).

It is good to just be content with one phone, especially if it is a smartphone. Who needs two phones anyway?

It doesn't jynx anything .... I've always had a back up cell phone ... right now I have a Motorola Milestone 3 and an original Motorola Milestone as a back up which is my old cell phone ... I upgrade every couple years and always keep the previous phone as a spare then get rid of the one I had before that which was a Blackberry 8330 ... I've never lost or broken a cell phone in my life and have had a mobile phone since they made those big bulky bag phones with an antenna and corded handset but still keep my current cell in an Otter box.

If you [according to you] never have lost a phone in your life, then what's the purpose of having a backup cell phone?

You said it yourself ... a backup ... just in case ... no I've never lost or broken one but still keep it in that Otter box and carry insurance with my carrier too ... just in case ...

nope. don't have a spare phone. don't need it.

I would say its good to have a spare. In this area phones get stolen a lot. I usually leave my old phone as a spare. Also here its common to have two cell phones. An american one and a mexican cell.

I can't be 100% sure but in the past I was told that any cel phone as long as it has battery life can call 911 even without a service company. That to me would be a good reason to keep a old phone once you have upgraded.

Yep sure can any cell phone as long as it can pick up a signal can call 911 no matter what ;)

I, too, am considering getting a spare phone for myself, but only if it's affordable, like that $35 plan with Virgin Mobile is, and it certainly would go a long way in helping me if something should ever happen to my current phone.

Nope, don't need it. I have had my Samsung Galaxy 3s for almost 2 years without breaking or losing it. It is my daughter who needs the spare phone as she is always losing her phone! GRRR

Are you rich? If so, sure go ahead but whats point? If I lost or somebody stole my stupidphone all I do is call Verizon and I will have new phone by next business day. No big deal.

Other to consider, second phone could easily cost you 50 bucks a month. Save that money put in emergency account, if you never lost it, you still have that money in bank, but if lost, okay that money in emergency account should cover replacement. Cost you nothing literally,. You could rake up 600 dollars in just a year going that way instead of second phone.

I keep a spare and sometimes more than one. However they are not connected to any plan and I tend to be hard on cell phones. I lose them and get them wet a lot. We have plenty of old phones that we give away or have as replacements. So yes we believe in having backup cell phones.

I am sooooo surprised that so many of you are saying that the spare would be kept active. At the start of this thread what I expected a lot to do is keep their old phone when getting a new one but not have the old phone active on any plan. The idea being to keep the old one on hand to activate quickly if something happens with the newest one.

When I upgrade our phones I hang onto the old ones as backups. If something happens to the new ones I can bring the an old one in and have them switch the phone numbers. If you do this you don't have to have insurance on your phone and pay deductibles to get replacements.

I can easily get a replacement in no time if I lose my phone. Whenever I get a new phone, the old one is stored away for the purpose of later showing the evolution of the cell phone. I have stored away a Wyndtell pager (remember those?), T-Mobile Sidekick I & III.
