Hello,

Has anyone suffered discrimination in the workplace because of their deafness?

Everyone knows that the use of capital letters in an e-mail is shouting. A person sent me one such mail and then send it again, inferring that I would not have heard it the first time. I know that it was a deliberate act because this person used to shout in mails to someone else in the office in the same way - and joke about it.

I was deeply insulted and wish to take some action to prevent this happening again.

Can anyone advise me. I'm in the UK.

Many thanks

Zoot

Have not experinced it but had FEW deaf profession doing that to me and they weren't "shouting" also it depend how their english is written, I know they don't mean it at times and is not offended by it.

U could contact DDA and query about it.

Good luck

(i am from UK too so welcome to AD)

At my work I have noticed that a lot of people who are computer illiterate write emails using capital letters or write they in using an impolite tone.

If a work colleague only wrote emails using capital letters to me, then I would be offended, too. And, chances are, if I can't ignore their email, then I will reply to their email using capital letters coupled with super-sized fonts. :)

Is it possible that he does not know it is shouting but seriously people who thinks that using capital letters means shouting is the dumbest thing I ever heard of, there is some people who prefers to use uppercase letters

This sort of reminded me of this article that took place in Auckland.

Perhaps, this is something you should take up with the head of your department?

Discrimination is when they don't let you do something because of being different such as race, gender, handicap, etc.

Sending you emails with everything in caps is more of harassment or joking... than discrimination.

Have you tried talking to that person and telling that person that it bothers you when he does that? It wouldn't be appropriate to complain about it if he didn't know it bothered you.

I have friends who use caps in their AIMs and emails because they like it better. Sometimes, they do it because they want to get their point across or something like that.

My parents have been using the internet for almost 15 years and they still don't know about the concept of caps being seen as yelling. In fact, my dad finally learned what LOL meant after I told him. He never knew what it meant for 7 years.

So, not everyone is fully educated on fads or concepts of online communication usage, etc.

I know a couple of people that use caps when writing messages... usually it makes me laugh because when I read it I imagine them yelling , but they usually don't really think anything of it.
