Hello everyone,

I do qualify for CI, and seriously considering of getting one. However, I'm waiting for second opinion because I didn't quite feel comfortable with the CI audi that told me that I qualify without even starting the hearing tests. SO, I found another one, and she gave me loads of information, while the first one didn't give me anything.

ANyways, I'm curious what is the main difference between the Nucleus 24 Contour Advance and the Nucleus Freedom implant? I know Nucleus was the previous generation before Freedom implant, but through the books, I see that the Freedom has 22 electrodes, but the Nucleus 24 has 24. Doesn't make sense to me. When did Freedom implant come out? 2005?

Secondly, can those people who got Nucleus 24 upgrade their processor to Freedom? I assume if you have Freedom implant and Freedom processor, it works better than Nucleus 24 Contour Advance implant and Freedom processor.

I am just curious the differences.

After I finish the 2nd opinion, I'll keep you guys updated for those who helped me out with decisions.

For point #1 - Yeah, the Freedom came out in 2005. I was part of the study they did to get FDA approval. My surgery was March 2005. I believe it was late spring/early summer when the FDA finally approved it.

As far as the differences between the implant devices, I'm not rightly sure (beyond the count of stimulus points). All I can say is that it (Freedom) works just fine and I'm doing great with mine.

For point #2 - Yep, one can upgrade from the nucleus processor to the Freedom. They started that upgrade route a little while ago.

I think the main differences concern the speech processing software and available program speeds rather than number of electrodes etc. I've heard some people say that the number of electrodes past a certain point doesn't matter much anyway but rather the way in which they interplay and interact.

I've never had an Nucleus 24 but memory of those who have upgraded to the Freedom have commented that the Freedom is more sensitive to sounds and they can hear better with it.

I mean about the implant themselves, not the processor. Processor, I know it does the job much better than the SPRrit, and SPRint.

They both have 22 active electrodes and then two ground electrodes making a total 24 electrodes for both versions. There is also a third ground with a hard ball at the end on a seperate wire. I manage that the freedom version implant has a updated chip inside. Physically they look similar according to the surgeon guides that I have seen.
