Diet soda may not help you meet your weight-loss goals.

A new study conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health shows that overweight and obese adults who drank diet beverages took in more food calories on average than their counterparts who drank the sugary stuff.

"Although overweight and obese adults who drink diet soda eat a comparable amount of total calories as heavier adults who drink sugary beverages, they consume significantly more calories from solid food at both meals and snacks," lead study author Sara Bleich, associate professor in the Bloomberg School's Department of Health Policy and Management, said in a press release.

Researchers looked at information from the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which is a population-based survey that looks at the health and nutrition of U.S. adults. They looked particularly at diet beverage consumption, caloric intake and body weight.

Overall, diet soda consumption rates increased 17 percent from 1965 to today. Currently, about 20 percent of U.S. adults drink diet beverages.

Despite the calories they cut by sipping on diet drinks, researchers found adults who drank diet beverages ate more calories from solid food.

"The results of our study suggest that overweight and obese adults looking to lose or maintain their weight -- who have already made the switch from sugary to diet beverages -- may need to look carefully at other components of their solid-food diet, particularly sweet snacks, to potentially identify areas for modification," Bleich said.

The study was published in the American Journal of Public Health on Jan. 16.

The researchers believe that the artificial sweeteners may activate more reward centers in the brain. This in turn affects a person's appetite, making the diet drinkers eat more food because they don’t think they are getting enough sugar in their bloodstreams.

Dr. Chris Ochner, an assistant professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York who was not involved in the study, disagrees that artificial sweeteners are squarely to blame.

“Diet soda is not making people fat,” Ochner, who researches obesity prevention and treatment, said to CBS News. “Eating too many calories is making too many people fat.”

Ochner said our bodies adjust to the levels of calories that we are accustomed to eating. For example, if a person is starved for five days, certain processes kick in -- including metabolism slowing and brain chemistry changes that make calorie-dense foods look more appealing -- in order to help the person survive.

Similarly, the body of a person who weighs 400 pounds who suddenly cuts their calories has to go through an adjustment. But their bodies are so used to the added calories, that they make up for it in other ways like eating a slightly larger portion of cake or having an extra slice of pizza because they crave it.

Instead of picking certain items to cut out of our diet, we should be watching everything we consume all together, he said.

“Everything in moderation -- what mom said is true in life,” Ochner commented.

I'm been drink pop soda for long times till I got kidney stone in 2011 but I'm quit pop soda because it's can damages my kidney and sparkling also if you drink lots pop soda you need careful to drink..I can't drink pop soda and tea anymore I drink mostly water it's helpful for me..
 
It's best to stay away from processed foods. Instead of soda try ice water with a squeeze of lemon juice. You can use the rest of the lemon for tea, salmon or guac, the only limit is your imagination. Also, the lemon will last n the fridge for a week so you can use it for other drinks.
 
Very old news. I already knew it like 10 years ago. Noticed mostly overweight always drink diet soda?

Right!!! Aspartame is horrible for you!! I read somewhere it causes women to store more fat on their hips and thighs. Go go diet drink o_O
 
im been drink lots pop soda for longtimes till i got kidney stone but i cant feel my kidney and i told my mom i need straighten to emergency room but i cant eat also but emergency room doctor told my mom says i have kidney stone when i went cat scan but emergency room doctor studies my kidney and im almost lose my lifes but im went see urology discussion about scope my kidney stone but i cant show you pictures for my personal reasons im so nervous about scope on my kidney stone and urology doctor found stone on my kidney its so small and soggy kidney thankness godness for that but urology dr says i can drink water mostly i do bans tea and pop soda bad choice for me..

You can drink soda - just Sprite, Sierra Mist or 7up only.
 
I got kidney stone after took a lot of Rolaids (10-15 tablets per day) before replaced with PPI drugs (Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix, Prevacid, Dexilant).
 
Maybe FDA don't care about overweight or cancer. Just care about short life like few years.

Yes I believe Diet fake over weight obesity is risk. anytimes serious, people life addict

I reading to comments Diet is coke is very. I recommand water no calories.

I do drink sprite once per days but not often or another types of lime pop soda I do love drink sprite I know sprakling bad for me I need to careful to drink I do bans pop soda expect diet coke and another types pop soda it's can damages my kidney or organs I'm been back and forth to urology and dr says my kidney stone not found one I says oh really! I can drink sprite and Sierra mist both I do drink 7up sometimes not often..
 
Who didn't know this by now??? Anything artificial is terrible for you, regardless if it's stamped with the word "diet" written in fancy letters and colors or not. :roll: Good ol' water is pretty much the only safe route to go here. :P
 
This can't be a shock to anyone. Water is the best drink, soda is just toxic to your system and the worst thing you can do to your teeth. I can't believe people need a study to state the obvious.

Well, sugary soda is no worse than diet soda.

Diet soda makes you want to eat more solid foods but sugary soda doesn't.

I managed to lose a lot of weight while consume Sprite in moderation and it isn't dangerous to consume sugary soda in moderation - just watch calorie.
