Hello,

Firstly, I wanted to let everyone know that I've finally received my surgery this November 8th, after a month's delay (They needed the OR for another more urgent patient) and I am currently healing for now. No major problems after the surgery beside the loss of taste and a headache.

Anyway, onto the subject, I've been reading this article here: Aeropause - The goods on gaming

They mention objects that can effect the peacemaker, and it made me wonder, what exactly effect the CI? I know that I've been told that static electricity and MRI do their damage, but does anything else raised in the article be something we should avoid?

I also apologize if this seems like an odd question, I am still trying to learn more about this technology. :)

Take care!

Yes to MRI machines and caution with going through scans at airports. Everything else you don't need to worry about.

I have a medical bracelet that says "cochlear implant - no MRI". So if I am knocked unconscious and the doctors want to do an MRI (apparently this is rare to happen) then they know not to do it. What they do if you need an MRI desperately is to do a minor surgery to take out the magnet only and then reinsert it after the MRI.

I travelled internationally recently and went through 4 different international airports. On the way out I played safe and told the security that I had a CI and they just manually wanded me. It was not a problem and they knew what to do. On the way back I was in a stuff all mood and just walked through all the scanning machines and my CI was perfectly fine. They usually advise this out of caution but there are not many stories of people having their programs wiped off.

Never put your CI processor on a baggage conveyor belt though as it has static electricity.

Well, if you are going to get technical, I will remind everybody to be careful about going down those plastic slides too! ;)

LOL! Hope Fragmenter makes note of that for his son!

Anyway, Cyber -- glad you got through surgery fine. And when will you be "turned on"? Wish you the best!

How about not standing in a downpour without a waterproof processor? LOL! :)

Reba,

That's an interesting question. Since I'm also curious to know the answer, I posed your question (without giving your name) to one of the CI forums I belong to. Hopefully someone will have an answer (unless Boult knows?). Stay tuned. :)

Like any electronic device, a CI would be fried by an EMP (shielding circuitry against an EMP of any decent size is very expensive). Fortunately, EMPs are not practical - they're big, expensive, hard to control, and they tend to hurt the people who use them as much as the target. I believe that their use would be politically untenable, as well, due to the high collateral damage involved.

Basically, if you can drop an EMP somewhere, you may as well just bomb it outright - the effects will be similar in the end.

Now where's that [geek] smiley ...
