SCHOOL CLOSURE PLAN INCLUDES DETROIT DAY SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
A massive closure plan by Detroit Public Schools calls for shutting Osborn, Kettering and Cooley high schools while preserving as many K-8 schools as possible on the city's outskirts to prevent more students from fleeing to the suburbs. The plan to be announced today will mean about 45 building closures this year and a savings of $31 million. Among the elementary and middle schools on the closure list: Detroit Day School for the Deaf. Link: Deafweekly, March 17.

Oh that sucks! I still think that they should keep it open, as an option. But on the upside, maybe that will mean that Michigan School for the Deaf will get a bunch of new students.
Which is good. Detroit is quite dangerous and run down, and many students at the school may do better at the state school (and be safer)

Agreed. I used to attend Detroit Day School. My siblings attended Osborn.

Oh.....are you sad that your alma mater has closed? Was Detroit dangerous when you were a kid too? I have to say I think the key to saving res schools could be encouraging dhh kids from dangerous or super poor areas (eg Appalachia, Indian reservations, Camden NJ, etc) to attend their state's res schools.

Not really dangerous back in 60's. MSD might be better place for them to be but is their education any better than DDSD? I can't say because I didn't attended MSD.

I also suspected that some want the land that DDSD stands on because it is a prime location. An interpreter told me that years ago. If so, they are getting what they want.

Good point, but on the other hand city schools (except for magnet/exam schools) tend to be pretty bad. I dunno. I think they should keep it at least. Or maybe close it, and then reopen it again.
And yeah it's prolly partly corrupt politics playing a part.

Aww. I really wanted to do some volunteering there. That's really disappointing.

queenbee, they actually saved it. It is open for another year. YEAH!!!!!!
