Teens Were Acting Uncontrollably, Deputies Say

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Five St. Johns County teens between the ages of 15 and 17 were taken to Jacksonville hospitals over the weekend after ingesting an unknown substance, possibly a type of bath salts, St. Johns County deputies said.

Deputies were called to a home in the 100 block of North Lake Cunningham Avenue at 4:20 p.m. Saturday in reference to a 17-year-old who was out of control. Deputies said the teen's father was trying to secure him, but the teen fought his father and several deputies.

The teen struck one deputy in the face with his fist and continued to fight his father and three deputies, and at one point he was able to throw the four men off of himself and still stood up, deputies said.

The teen was repeatedly stunned with a Taser and struck with a baton, none of which had any effect, deputies said.

After fighting with deputies for 15 minutes, the teen was secured onto a stretcher with assistance from St. Johns County Fire Rescue, and he was taken to Baptist Medical Center South, deputies said.

Deputies said they found three other teens on the property who were exhibiting similar symptoms, though they didn't fight with deputies. They were also taken to the hospital.

Deputies said the teens had received a substance called 2C-I, a psychedelic drug, from a 16-year-old who lived at another home on the street.

When deputies went to that home, they learned that the 16-year-old's mother was looking for help because her son was "out of control," deputies said.

Deputies said they found the 16-year-old in the back yard secured by a family friend. The teen told deputies he took the 2C-I that he received over the Internet from China, deputies said. He was also taken to Baptist Medical Center South.

All of the teens were then taken to Wolfson Children's Hospital.

Deputies said they found a plastic bag containing a white, flaky substance that tested negative for methamphetamine and LSD. They said the substance will be sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to determine its contents.

Deputies said charges are pending further investigation by Youth Resource deputies of the Sheriff's Office.

Oh, my, that's bad news. :( I hope the teens will be OK with no long-lasting bad affects.

Yeah, spread it all over the news so other kids will go, "Hey I never thought of that!" and then try it.

Kids will find out about it regardless of it being on the news or not. According to the article One kid bought it online and shared it with others. Peer pressure is a bitch.

I am glad they put this on the news to make the parents aware of what new drugs are out there. It helps us keep an eye out and educate the kids to NOT touch that crap.

Yeah, the kids probably already know about from the internet and from their friends. It's the parents, schools, and law enforcement who need to be informed about what's going on with the kids.

Right. And that gives them a head start on educating the kids on the danger of such drugs. The only and probably best recourse is to be continually pro-active on these things knowing how peer pressure plays a huge roll on influencing them to make the wrong decisions.

Whoa! New drug! I should try these out! haha, just kidding. These teens should know better! I was like 8 years old and I understand the risks of drugs. I never smoke or drink in my life EXPECT wines for special days with my family.

Omg. You're horrible.

I quizzed my boys about ingesting "bath salts"...they never heard of it, and neither had I until I read the news story.....

I Don't have any in my home, only perfumed Bubble Bath...and we, as parents, need to keep on top of what kids are using these days, simply to get a "high"....I do remember a friend of mine, who could not keep any type of aerosol spray in her home, (i.e. hair spray, etc.)....

I have heard of the bath salt and the fake pot. People are learning to weasle around the DEA. To come up with all this synthetic drugs and giving it innocent names, that are not on the controlled substance list and making it not quite illegal. DEA and Lawmakers are scrambling to make these things illegal to possess.

At least they had nice lilac scented breath. :giggle:

Kids can find all kinds of things to get a buzz from: aerosols, glue, paint, gasoline, etc. Most of these things are cheap and readily available in every home.

Yeah. It is a shame that people do not realize how much brain damage those cause, though.
I have a friend who inhaled air fresheners and he is almost a gibbering idiot nowadays. :(

None of these things can be purchased by a minor in the state of Florida. You also have to be 18 to buy a can of whipped cream. :)

Maybe monitor your kid's internet usage? Or don't let them have access to a credit card to purchase things online?

Yeah, peer pressure is a bitch. Not referring to parents, necessarily, but the way we educate kids about drugs, generally, isn't working. We go about it the wrong way.

whoa... from bath salt? loco.
