This is weird!

"Researchers have found a molecule that stores complex, high-quality memories, in a discovery that may one day lead to the ability to erase debilitating painful memories and addictions from the brain."

Spotless Mind? Unwanted Memories Might Be Erasable Without Harming Other Brain Functions

I am not sure what to make out of this. Do I really want painful memories removed? What happens if they are removed? Will my defense mechanisms fail? Shouldn't we learn from painful moments like someone dying in 9-11 to help us remember that we should stay viligant about terrorism?

What if my memory of my father dying is removed, would I know that I am missing something? People would tell me I was there and I would not remember.

Umm I don't know if I want it neither..

Btw, very interesting!

you raise some excellent questions, netrox. while i think this has the potential to be a good thing, i also think it could be detrimental as well. after all, if it were not for painful experiences/memories, how could we grow emotionally? the loss of my mother, father, one of my sisters, a dear friend, my first guide dog and my hearing all served to make me a stronger person.

That's what I thought so, all painfully memories I have made my life very interesting and strong. If I don't remember them, then what meaning of life anyway?

So, in order to have a meaning in life, you need to have some painful memories?

i think you do. without painful memories, life would be too "perfect" -- boring, in fact. we've all experienced painful memories in our lives at one point or another, so questioning whether or not they are imperative for a meaningful life seems moot.

My painful memories have helped me become who I am today. I wouldn't want to get rid of them. Plus they have allowed me to love deeper and to spread awareness wider, something I couldn't do as passionately if I was just another average Joe with a perfect life.

Erasing the addictions could be a good use, but I, too question the wisdom of erasing painful memories. We need to work through our pain in order to grow, not pretend it never existed.

Eat Prime Steak for a week then erase the flavor by eating MCD's burger for a week

You will be thanking yourself for not eating at MCD.. oh wait, there's tons of SSI people here....

Forget the idea then

<confused>

I was being a bit confusing as well..

Being spoiled by good things - it's good to go and get the worst thing of the good things you're used to refresh how good you have it.

And I stopped while I realized a high rate of people on this site are more likely not to be able to afford the luxury of the things i was thinking.

Proof? Sources?

How do you know who can afford what?

More people here are more likely to be on SSI than people on millionairematch.com, no?

That's what I'm getting at. :)

I think it's best to try natural methods like Hypnosis to deal with issues better not erase memories. It doesn't sound human to do this. It sounds Alien.

I think I do. It's all about learning the things in the reality. If nothing was painfully in the life, then it will be boring and less interest. You know, I don't want my life as "nothing new".

Yup that's what I thought so :)

They had better figure out the correct areas to erase, or one's entire memory will be affected. It's totally moot, how will one learn and prevent themselves from repeating their mistakes? Not very convincing science, you're better off coming to terms with your experience.
