wcco.com - Death Penalty Hearing For Deaf S.D. Trial To Begin

Jurors could start deliberating as early as late tomorrow whether Daphne Wright of Sioux Falls, S.D. will become the first woman on death row in South Dakota.

Wright was convicted last week of kidnapping, murdering and dismembering 42-year-old Darlene VanderGiesen.

Prosecutors say Wright was jealous of the friendship that VanderGiesen had with Wright's former lover.

At a hearing today, the judge denied her lawyers' request to not allow the death penalty sentence because of race, disability or sexual orientation.

Wright is black, homosexual and deaf.

Prosecutors and defense lawyers say they will likely be able to present their cases tomorrow.

If Wright is sentenced to death, she would likely be the first deaf woman on death row in the nation.

I dont think society is willing to pay million$ to keep someone, at least a chainsaw murderer, alive in a cage.

Justice is a fair if someone uses texas saw chain to murder a lover therefore put a murderer into death penalty! If I am judge to support death penalty when i heard the weigh of situation which is HORRIBLE by texas saw chain to make apart person's body I would be very sick to hear and see this pictures. I would be putting a murderer in death penalty!!!!!

I do not support the death penalty either. In fact, I will argue on Monday why NY should NOT restate the death penalty in class debate with 5 other girls. The State Supreme Court ruled it was unconsititutional in 2004.

This should conclude tomorrow and be given to the jury.

i dont support death penalty.i think she must be given a life sentence with a parole after 10 or 15 years.we all make mistakes. She will be learning that crime never pays.we all learn from mistakes that we make.i feel sorry for her but she was not thinking straigt.
