So I found out a little over a week ago that I have Stage 1 hypertension. I'm still trying to get health insurance before going to another doctor about it. I've heard being on HBP meds doesn't have the greatest side effects either. So while I am waiting for insurance to process I'm trying to eat a healthier diet and watch what meds I already take. So far, I know anything NSAID medications are bad for me along with decongestants also stuff for heartburn isn't good for me either (so now I'm struggling with finding something for allergies and heartburn that is safe for me to use at least for now). As far as pain goes, I've removed ibuprofen from my shelf and switched to tylenol. My last reading was 152/98.

When I was trying to see the foods I can and can't have, things got pretty overwhelming for me. I know you can't completely cut sodium out of your diet, but I also know theres tons of things that have loads of sodium in them.

I guess the whole point in my post here, is to ask for advise (or any at all) diet wise because I keep going back thinking "salad, salad, salad" when I get burnt out easily.

Sign up for something like Myfitnesspal and if you faithfully catalog everything you eat, you will have a good record of your sodium intake, and see where you can cut down, or know when to stop in your consumption for the day.

It is also good for tracking your calorie intake, as I am sure you know you can have quite an effect on your blood pressure just by losing weight.

my dad also high pressure :( I am worry on my dad. I think so he seems on salt too much.

it is very serious alots of on problem stress pressure. I pretty sure he can learn it good things okay fine. He know, my gramma know careful watch for on my dad. my grammma check to pressure to dad.. you can do know how really careful wise how don't be overwhelming stress. I know

It is very important for you health

If you avoid buying premade food and meals you can cut down on your salt intake a lot. Try making your own salad dressings and buy salt free pasta sauce and add your own spices to it.

It's not that bad. All natural foods are what you really need, stay away from the processed stuff. Especially Ramen noodles and other packaged things. I can't have a lot of salt a well. Soups can also be high in sodium, but you can find some lower ones.

Get yourself a steamer for vegetables and a contact grill for Salmon. Stay away from cured meats and battered stuff. Make skinless chicken breast on the grill, etc.

I would also recommend a daily exercise routine. Don't start with stuff like Insanity or PX90 until you get up to a certain level of exercise.

You'll be fine.

Thanks guys! It's just an adjustment for me but I'm trying to be good about eating right. Anyone know what I can take safely for heartburn? Pretty sure I have GERD :-(

I am sure there are web sites that will tell what help heartburns . If you use peppermint toothpaste you may want to try another flavor as peppermint can upset your heartburn

I guess the hardest part of "dealing" with high blood pressure-one doesn't :"feel" anything.. It does show up in the machine readings however. Thus one's doctor has many options which "pill" is suitable to a specific person.

I understand part of the "metabolic syndrome" which can lead to a "heart attack". Thus one should be "checked over" to "deal" with this problem before it "can be too late"! Appears that exercise can "drop high blood pressure" if done over extensive time.

Never had high blood pressure...I avoid SALT like the plague...use pepper instead.

As for GERD or acid reflux...I do have that occassionally....have a prescription for it. But feel as long as you avoid caffeine and nicotine and spicey foods it would help a lot....Nexxum is good, but is expensive and muxt have a Rx for it...but feel if you ask the Pharmacist what the best over-the-counter remedy is, it might help you a lot.....

Sodium is one of the things I've been trying to cut out too. I was surprised that many of the garden burgers and such have as much or more sodium than hot dogs! Like people have mentioned it's the processed foods. If you make it yourself you can cut out a ton of sodium.

One of my favorite meals to make is spanish rice. If you buy the boxed stuff it has crazy amounts of sodium but it's real easy to make. If you read the box one serving has like 450mg of sodium and about 3 servings per box. I used to eat the ENTIRE BOX!

1/2 Cup Chopped Fresh Green Pepper
1/2 Cup Chopped Fresh Onion
1 8 oz. Can No Salt Added Tomato Sauce

I try that somewhat but I'm very sensitive to pepper, both inhaling it or swallowing it. It causes me sneezing and coughing fits.

Taking a Nexium 30 minutes before my evening meal helps with that. I limit dairy products in the evening. Also, I never lie down immediately after eating, and I sleep with the head of my bed elevated.
