I recently did a google search because I am looking into Deafness and abuse. Because of a deaf character in my novel. I didn't find what I wanted.
I just found a lot of articles about abuse in deaf schools from the press. So I wanted to do a poll to put things in perspective.

I've edited this since It seems I didn't make myself very clear the first time round. I hope I make myself clearer this time?

There has been a lot of focus about deaf children abused in Deaf schools recently. I would like to put this in some sort of perspective.

Recently? Well, Can you elaborate on that and Where are you getting the information from?

Just curious.

Sexual abuse? That never happened to me.
Abuse by deny me a language that I can really understand.... Big Yes. The pro-oralism stinks and still does.

Ive been picked up, put down, picked on and tossed around. While I had a fairly happy childhood, I didnt have many friends at best I was an isolate at school. During my adolescence I faced more than anyone ever should. But how I managed to come out relatively stable (but not unscarred) is something I dont understand. I admit though because of this, it has triggered depression in me and there are times that I feel I am better left alone rather than running to everyone crying out my frustrations.

Thanks for voting in poll.
Sorry not to be clear. I've edited my original post. Hope it makes more sense now.

I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone. I just thought it was common knowledge that the press are targetting deaf schools?
*confused*

All I want to do is put the whole matter in perspective. Since I feel that abuse of the deaf tends to happen in many differant settings. But the deaf seem just to be targetting one of them.

I'm afraid I can't find any links to put things in perspective. Which is why I've started this thread.

I did a google search and most of the articles I came up with were about abuse at deaf schools. I didn't read any of them since It wasn't what I was looking for really. Again I'm sorry if I aren't making myself clear.

Abuse happens in all settings but at the moment the press just seem to want to focus on one of those settings, which is why I wanted to put things in perspective.

I'm sorry to hear about your experiences. Life in mainstream education was no bed of roses for me either. I was bullied so much at one mainstream school that I left to go to a Partial Hearing Unit.

Nope, never was abused by anyone... I don't know if this could be considered as an abuse...at the residence school (where I was a day student), four of the Deaf teachers didn't like me and bullied me.

Deaf students were abused by nuns and a priest, which happened at Boston School for the Deaf years ago, I think.

I was somewhat abused at mainstream school. Although I choose "I was abused at a Deaf school," there's no option for "I was abused at a blind school," so I didn't choose that option in the poll.

This is due to the fact that I'm hearing impaired, not deaf.

Or is this poll only for the deaf and not hard of hearing/hearing impaired?

I was abused mentally at my mainstreamed school.

What are you exactly looking for?

Certainly, Abuses does happen in various settings but to solely to say that Deaf Schools have abuse isn't really an idea to begin with because abuses does happen in hearing schools, private schools, so and on.

As for the press, That is a whole 'nother issue because the press LOVES to get any information that seems to be too good to be true. Often time, the press tends to exaggerate it a bit to make it sound like it's really believable.

Maybe she is referring to Louisiana School for the Deaf. Haven't they closed and reopened recently?

Dreama.

Abuse of any type, is widespread. It happens everywhere. In churches, youth groups, public schools and even behind closed doors of peoples homes.

Deaf schools is nothing but the medias target as well as the catholic priests are. Just more publicized than other cases of abuse.

I'm refering to physical abuse, mental abuse, sexual abuse. Anything which leaves long lasting scars.

Bullying can count as abuse if it is severe enough.

that's true, dreama.

this is a little off-topic, but in elementary school i used to be bullied and made fun of because of my blindness. other classmates used to deliberately trip me in the hallway and step on my cane as i walked by.

as babyblue said, abuse happens in a variety of settings. abuse also happens at schools for the blind, so schools for the deaf are not the only places where this can occur.
