What one word best describes (partly or completely) Deaf culture- as far as a generalized group trait?

My word is Plucky.

Now it is your turn.

Only ONE? Aww :( lol
HMMM......... Hard to pick just one....
Dramatic
(Always get involved in other people's drama, start an drama, or just plain being dramatic )

^ Skullchick .... dang, I was going to pick that very word of yours. :)

After much thought .... Determination

Why are we stereotyping (or generalizing) our deaf culture? That's pointless and kind of an insult.

For example, just because some may thrive on "drama" doesn't mean we as a whole group are full of drama. The same could be said for hearing people ....

Sheesh take a chill pill, you're being dramatic.
Look at AB thread mention can be partly or whole about deaf culture.
If it insult you, then don't read it

Technically speaking, if you are counting ASL as a lingual language, you might be in error- the word lingual refers to the tongue (a verbal language). ASL is a manual language. What I (knowing English, Spanich and [soon] ASL) would say to folks is that I am bilingual and I also know the manual language of the Deaf called ASL. That would be much more accurate.

Am I being too strict with this type of thinking?

ASL is a language and so is English. I consider myself bilingual..remmy when this definition was developed, it was developed by hearing people who didnt think of deaf people. That's the problem with things like that...people out there forget about deaf people's needs when defining a language.

Deaf people are bilingual and I dont care what the definition says about the tongue. That's the heairng way...

I am only saying is that ASL is not a lingual language. ASL is (of course) a true blue language. I am not saying that it isn't in no way at all. ASL is a language, but not a spoken language. So, in my view, it can't be called a ligual (bilingual, trilingual, etc.) language to those like me (and you) who used more than one lanuguage.

I sure hope that's clear. We would not want to twist my words around and make them look as if I am saying something negative. Thank you. :)

I disagree...

I am not going to follow the rules just because some hearing people made this rule about languages without thinking of deaf people. I consider myself and many deaf people bilingual or even trilingual.

My brother cant use English in the spoken form but can read and write English fluently. He is also an ASL user so if we are following the old outdated rules of what lingual means, that means my brother in nothing-lingual. I dont believe in that.

I consider it being a second language. You now can use sign language as a second language, to earn college credits.

shel90...please you are misunderstanding. I agree that ASL is a language. I never said anything to the contrary. Where in posts have I said that ASL is not a language? No where shel90. ASL is a language: there no doubt about that. It is just not a spoken language. That's all I am saying.

I can't see how my words are twisted around.

In Webster's dictionary the word lingual means:

1 a: of, relating to, or resembling the tongue b: lying near or next to the tongue; especially : relating to or being the surface of tooth next to the tongue c: produced by the tongue
2: linguistic

In the same dictionary the word linguistics means:

the study of human speech including the units, nature, structure, and modification of language

Do you see my meaning now shel90?? ASL IS A LANGUAGE...a MANUAL language.

Oh and also, I am not a wicked hearie that claims that ASL is not a language. Please my friend don't judge me too harshly. In fact, don't judge anyone in that manner. It's just unfair shel90. I am glad you understand me now.
