Detective: Deaf woman raped | morganton.com
A deaf woman on crutches is in protective custody after she was allegedly assaulted, raped and kidnapped.
The accused kidnapper — 21-year-old Zeke Ray Dale — is out on bond after being charged with four felony counts, including first-degree sexual offense.
The alleged incident happened at 7 p.m. Jan. 7.
The woman told officers that Dale, of 4758 Laurel Haven Ave., first assaulted her at her home, according to Detective David South of the Burke County Sheriff's Office. The alleged victim knows the suspect in the case, South said.
Dale then took her inside the home and forced her to have sex with him, according to South.
After the sexual assault, which included Dale beating the woman with one of her own crutches, he then forced her to drive him to the store because he does not have a license, the detective said.
When the pair got to the store, the woman jumped out of the car and ran inside for help, according to South. Dale then moved to the driver's seat and sped off before cops could get to the scene.
Dale was initially arrested at 4:29 p.m. Tuesday and charged by warrant with first-degree sexual offense, kidnapping and aggravated assault on a handicapped person, according to an arrest report.
South said the bond was set at $225,000, which Dale posted in the magistrate's office.
A second warrant was served to Dale in the case at 3 p.m. Wednesday, with the new charge being assault with a deadly weapon.
Bond was set at $24,999.99, which Dale posted at the magistrate's office.
South said that Dale's mother, 48-year-old Rhonda Woody Dale, was charged Tuesday with obstruction of justice after police allege she helped conceal the whereabouts of her son.
The woman who reported the incident has severe bruising from the incident, South said. She is in protective custody and deputies declined to release her whereabouts.
Under North Carolina law, first-degree sexual offense is a Class B1 felony and is punishable by a sentence of between 12 years and life imprisonment upon conviction, depending on prior criminal history, and aggravating and mitigating circumstances.
