Hello, I am learning how to use the computer on the internet. I have been deaf since birth. I did not learn how to use the computer at my school as it was a long time ago since I graduated from high school in 1966. As for the schools, I attended oral school in elementary and high school. We were not allow to use sign language back then. After graduation, I learn how to sign from a deaf pastor who preach at the deaf Lutheran Church. I am Catholic, but I was very grateful for having him teach me how to sign ASL. That was when I was twenty years old. I went to two different colleges that specialize in ASL interpreting for me to go into the field and do my major in community college. I was very frustreated when I tried to understand what is going on in class during elementary and high school. I was not happy at all. Now that sign language really open a new life for me and happy about it but hearing people still want me to lipread them. Some of the people are interest in sign language but did not practice enough to communicate with me. But it was fun. My husband is hearing and did not want to learn all the sign language words like my parents. They expect me to understand what they are saying and I keep telling them that they can not make me hear with loud noise and expect me to hear the sound with words. That never happen and it will not work that way. Right now I am living on the Indian reservation in Canada and I am an old elder of 61 years old. I enjoy the computer and I am learning how to use it. I want to share with you and help you what is like to be deaf in the every day lifestyle. :ty:

Hello and welcome to Alldeaf! Nice to know that that you're willing to share some of your experiences/insights with the rest of us here in AD, also, as for learning how to use your computer, I sure hope everything does go nice and smoothly for you so you can let your 'written-word' be seen as well as seeing (reading) others. ;) I do hope your stay here is a great one! :)

:welcome: to AD and hope u enjoy your stay here! :)

Like u, I grew up orally and was denied sign language despite my expressions for wanting to learn it. I was told that I was too smart for it and blah blah. Learned ASL in my 20s and like u it was like a new life opened up for me. I feel grateful for having learning it and sad that I was denied it growing up when it could have helped me out a lot.

I use ASL in my daily life now...use my oral skills like 10% of the time.
